About this listen

After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself. Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning. On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.

A dark fairytale esque quest

This a contender for my fav book of the year !
This was an amazingly dark and weird fairytale that struck the right chords with me. I loved how it took all the well used fairy tale tropes and twisted them, making them more palatable for a modern audience. I also loved its discussion of Domestic Abuse and the cyclical nature of it. Overall just a wonderful book ! After a small blip from Kingfisher, theyve given me two absolutely fantastic reads.

She’s got a demon in her!

Fabulous book. I was a bit sceptical at first but after a couple of chapters, the story really took off, especially when the chicken is introduced (no spoilers). First book I’ve read in a while that I would love to illustrate!

Really great read

Great story, characters, plot and performance. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess it could be called a young adult book but I’m 50 and still loved it

Magical journey of hope and family bonds. Princesses, witches, fairy god mothers, bone dogs, goblin markets so full of interesting characters

Beautifully read tale of relatable characters

I loved this book. Beautifully read, with relatable fantasy characters- including older women who are flawed in relatable ways .

Original and enjoyable, with great narration

After a slow first quarter this really picked up; possessed demon chickens, phantom dogs, dark humour…a refreshing take on old school fairytales!

A dark fairytale let down by some questionable voice performances

My first Kingfisher book, and overall it's been really enjoyable. The narrator is expressive and engaging, but I really didn't like some of the voices/accents she put on for the different characters, particularly for the main male character - the accent was distractingly bad it meant I didn't connect emotionally with this character at all.

Narration aside, it was a cool twist on a fairytale that explored some serious topics such as relationship abuse and generational trauma. I liked that the protagonist wasn't your typical "badass". Tonally, it was a little confusing - there are some scenes that lean into dark fantasy with a touch of horror, but overall I found the the book surprisingly light and funny despite the seriousness of the topics explored. I loved the creepiness of the first chapter and was slightly disappointed that vibe wasn't maintained throughout, for me the book shone when it leaned darker and I wasn't as keen on the "comic relief" characters and moments.

I'm excited to check out more of this author's work, and possibly revisiting this as a physical book rather than audiobook.
