About this listen

The shooting of a Chinese liquor store owner in LA brings Harry Bosch back to the Rodney King riots and the moment a stranger gave a young cop sanctuary. Now the debt must be repaid, and Harry soon discovers the old man's death was no ordinary holdup.

Homing in on clues disregarded by the cops on the scene, Harry builds a picture of corruption and intimidation, with the local Triads at the heart of it. But as he tries to build a case and breach the impenetrable wall of silence in the local community, he finds he is taking a dragon by the tail - a dragon whose talons reach well beyond LA, and even the States.

Suddenly, the most precious thing in Harry's life is under threat, and he will need to leave the familiarity of his home turf, alone and without backup, if he is going to stop his worst nightmare from happening.

Surprisingly good read

I always enjoy this author and this particular character but the quality varies from a reliable entertainment to truly excellent . This one is excellent despite the concept not being immediately intriguing from the précis . I'd certainly recommend it.

Just keeps getting better and better.

Fast paced and intriguing from the first page. A little implausible in places but still a fantastic listen.

Michael Connelly at his best.

Good stuff

Another typically first class thriller from Michael Connelly.

That said, I dont think it's quite as good as his previous Harry Bosch books. The story is set in large part in Hong Kong and whilst you always have to suspend belief a little to enjoy this type of book, the location makes the plot bordering implausible as hinted at by a previous reviewer!

But dont let this put you off - I thoroughly enjoyed the book, notwithstanding, would give it five stars and recommend it - particularly if you are a fan of the author already

Not one of his best

I have just read this again, and it isn't one of the best books in the Bosch series. I do think that Len Cariou has an unfortunate way of narrating, he tends to sound as if he if speaking to a nursery class. I feel this would have been better if read differently. However, Bosch seemed a much more unpleasant guy in this book, in the later stories he is stubborn but reasonable, in this he seemed mean spirited.

Bosch without the cliche

I have enjoyed following the Bosch books as Connelly has managed to make homicide interesting without having to get too gory or disturbing. Although the cliches and stereotypes can be a little cringe-worthy and the huge leaps of deductive reasoning a bit too much of a stretch.

However, in this book we are spared the cliches and altogether the investigation unfolds well. The plot becomes complex and intricate before it all unravels to reveal a conclusion to the case.
