Summary

A new life begins....

As his 18th birthday approaches, the only thing that Xander Stryker wishes for - is death.

Yet, he wakes up each morning, forced to go on living and remembering the image of his stepfather murdering his mother. Instead of dying, he is thrown into a supernatural world and offered a choice: Continue his sorry life or start anew.

For Xander, the choice is obvious. In the new world, life is just as unforgiving. Horrors from his past lurk from the shadows. His self-destructive urges creep back. Old rage. New bloodlust. As they fuel a fresh legacy, Xander has to stand tall and show old monsters a stronger, better version of himself.

If you like grit, horror, and compelling character chemistry, take a bite out of the dark supernatural series by Nathan Squiers.

"Stand up and fight, Xander."

Noir indeed: this book lives up to it's title, from the opening chapter which tells of Elizabeth, a beautiful, disturbed and reclusive young artist who painted to capture her dream and perfection, through the brutal and abusive story of Xander, who lived so long in fear as a youth, he wanted to die until coming into his vampiric powers, to the final chapter itself. It is powerful and chilling, well written, and an unusual take on the worlds of the vampire.. Not the usual seduction and saving of garlic. The text moves between time frames, current and past, as well as different protagonist points of view, building a deeper weave of all of their lives. Just when one episode seems to be over, forgotten, suddenly it can reappear, exploding into the story again. The scenes are vividly portrayed to leave a strong after picture, black and white to show up the bright red of the blood...

Narration is by Skyler Morgan. His very pleasant on the ear voice is deceptively gentle, but he reads with precision, well articulated, well paced and, with just the right hint of emotion, allows the text itself to dominate and carry the reader. He also individually give appropriate voice to each character. A fine lerformance.

I was very fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Noir by the rights holder, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I am not usually a fan of the paranormal in stories, but there are exceltions, and this is definitely one of them. I shall certainly look out for the next in this serkes, and other works of the author, Nathan Squires. My only reservation was that I found there to be just too much violent action towards the conclusion and, despite it being inventive and well presented, grew bored with it. I realize, however, that this can often be a plus for many readers. This is a book to stir emotions, not least pity, sadness and disgust. It is a remarkable book and recommended but with the caveat that it has some very disturbing scenes.

Good

Xander is abusive by everyone the other pupils at school but mainly by his stepfather Kyle. Enjoyed listening to this and glad Xander got his revenge in the end.

Dark

I loved the narration of Skyler Morgan . I have found another enjoyable narrator to listen to.

This is a dark listen but I found myself absolutely hooked.
Interesting characters who I’d love to know more about. I feel & hope that Xander will eventually come in to his own and become a more likable character. The story is a fast paced, once it gets started.

Gets better as it goes

The opening chapters are darker and edgier than a Nick Cave song, and I have to admit that I almost have up on it. Sticking with it though it did open up and start telling the story.

Xander has had a crap start in life, between abuse at home and bullying in school. This is the story of his revenge and redemption. The story laid out it's lore nicely, jumping between characters where appropriate, and sticking to the rules it had laid out. Typical of any supernatural stories, the grim dark is there, and there are moments of WTF abilities but it never gets in the way.

All in all, a decent listen.

Almost Defeated by this Book

Maybe reading this one is different from listening. Maybe my issue is more with the narration than the story but I think it’s a bit of both.

The story didn’t grip me at all. The narration was fine but sounded quite… tinny? The ‘s’ sounds were very noticeable and off-putting at times. I’ve listened to other books by this narrator and found them easier to listen to so I can’t blame the narration solely.

The book itself just didn’t hold my interest. It was a little bland and there was no real story to keep me gripped. I’m not saying there was no story, it was just a little dull. I hate starting a book and not finishing it but this one was almost my first to give up on.

It just wasn’t my cup of tea.
