Summary

None of This Rocks is a memoir by Joe Trohman—lead guitarist and cofounder of Fall Out Boy—that unfolds like a double album full of revealing stories from his youth and his experiences of modern rock and roll stardom. With wit and wisdom, and maybe a little bit of whining, Trohman grapples with depression, his mother's brain cancer, antisemitism, pills, petty larceny, side hustles, and pop punk at the turn of the century.

None of This Rocks chronicles a turbulent life that has informed Trohman's music and his worldview. His mother suffered from mental illness and multiple brain tumors that eventually killed her. His father struggled with that tragedy, but was ultimately a supportive force in Trohman's life who fostered his thirst for knowledge. Trohman faced antisemitism in small-town Ohio, and he witnessed all levels of misogyny, racism, and violence amid the straight edge hardcore punk scene in Chicago. Then came Fall Out Boy. From the guitarist's very first glimpses of their popular ascension, to working with his heroes like Anthrax's Scott Ian, to writing for television with comedian Brian Posehn, Trohman takes listeners backstage, into the studio, and onto his couch. He shares his struggles with depression and substance abuse in a brutally honest and personal tone that listeners will appreciate. Not much of this rocks, perhaps, but it all adds up to a fascinating music memoir unlike any you've ever listened to.

*Trigger Warning* read the blurb first!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this memoir. I binged it in just over a day or so. It is full of raw emotion. I really felt the love and devotion he has for his girls (and the dogs). I thought Joe did a great job of being respectful of his band mates privacy. If your here for juicy FOB gossip - this is not the place.

Nice!

I'm not sure how people can complain that this book is a 'downer', as if that isn't implied by both the title, and also the blurb? It's quite obvious, if you're a fan, that Joe Trohman has had a rough ride, so if you're expecting this to be happiness and rainbows, then that's on you, really...
This audiobook is great, the words resonate more when they're coming from the mouth of the mind that wrote them!

People Complaining… He Didn’t Write This For You

An honest account of someone who I admire as a guitarist of my favourite band of all time.
If I didn’t want him to be honest about his life, experience and emotions then why would I read it?
I’ll admit, Joe, your joke delivery at time needs work, but for the most part I was happy to have an insight into my favourite band and one of the main creative forces behind it. If you’re only looking for sunshine and rainbows then don’t read autobiographies or memoirs. Life isn’t fun.

Cheese with that w(h)ine

I couldn’t get through this at all, I gave it an hour, but I couldn’t put up with anymore & im a big FOB fan,
Such a Debbie downer, I’m usually over the moon when it’s the person reading their own book, but my god his voice after a while is annoying & the comedic timing or lack there of made it impossible to finish.
