Summary

She’s the girl he left behind. He’s the boy she tried to forget. But after seven years apart, one passionately reckless night will tie them together forever …

As teenagers, Callie Ironside and Lewis Adair were inseparable. So much so, Lewis still can’t work out where it all went horribly wrong, or why he’s spent the last seven years in London away from the love of his life.

Callie knows exactly where it all went wrong and while she tried to move on—learning pastry techniques in Paris and dating French men—returning home to Ardnoch to work in her mother’s bakery only reminds her of the future she lost with Lewis.

But when a visit to London brings them unexpectedly together, the passion, pain and animosity between them leads to a one-night stand. For Lewis, it’s the beginning of winning Callie and his life in Ardnoch back. For Callie, it’s a mistake that’s shaken up the devastating heartbreak she fought hard to forget. However, Lewis is determined to fight for her, and proves it when their night together results in more than just unresolved feelings.

As they come to grips with impending parenthood and the mistakes they’ve both made, Callie and Lewis will not only have to decide to fight for a love that has endured so many years apart, but a mysterious adversary who seems intent on destroying the future they’re building together.

Young Love to Second Chances

After seeing Callie and Lewis fall in love in the background in the previous books in the Highlands series, I never thought their story would involve a second chance romance, so I began Northern Twilight with a sense of trepidation. What could’ve been so bad that could part loves’ young dream? Told in flash backs their breakup was angsty and painful for both and I felt the tears well up in sympathy. Misunderstandings and lack of communication just made the proceedings all the more painful for them both. But there was too much love and history between them to keep this pair apart, they just needed to find their way back to Ardnoch and each other with the incentive of a surprise pregnancy to speed them on their way

Their second chance played out in the beautiful setting of the Scottish Highlands and as usual Samantha Young’s love for her homeland shone through in every word. The chemistry and tension between Callie and Lewis was slowburn but palpable as they tried to find some common ground but struggled to leave past hurts behind. One of the highlights was the various relationships between the characters especially Callie and her mum Sloane. They really were each other’s best friend – sorry Lewis but you know it’s true – but it was amazing seeing the mama bear come out in Sloane’s defence of her daughter against the local gossip and I cheered along with the onlooking villagers. With a strong subplot that brought some mystery and suspense to the story as danger stalked Callie, this just might be my favourite book in the series and I’m hoping that we haven’t heard the last from the next generation.

As I’ve come to expect from the fabulous Shane East, who remains one of my favourite male narrators. He produced a first-class performance as Lewis. I’m sure he must have Scottish blood in him as he nails the accent perfectly each and every time and I’d happily listen to him recite his shopping list if he did it in a gruff Scottish brogue. His partner in this audiobook was Zara Hampton-Brown and together they brought Callie and Lewis to life. I loved the distinct differences between their portrayals of the young sweethearts, imbuing every ounce of pain and heartache into their performances and then those of adult Lewis and Callie with all their anger, animosity and passion. Their portrayals did justice to a beautiful love story.
