Summary

Odin is a love story that chronicles the relationship between Katherine, a successful although self-centered executive, and the puppy she literally snatched from deaths icy grip. After being rescued by her in a dramatic fashion, Odin comes to see her safety and wellbeing as the central purpose of his existence. Although the line between the savior and the saved may become blurred at times, their unconditional love and affection for one another remain clear and unimpeachable, even in the face of certain death.

Another great listen

Although not my usual genre, I did enjoy this short book. The story as always with this author was not clutered by unnecessary 'fill', his choice of narration partner was excellent, although the accompanying music I found distrating, but that's my personal view.

Be prepared with a tissue towards the end, that all I'm saying so as not to give away too much.

Oh how I wish my dog was like Odin.

ODIN

Odin is one of the most moving stories I have listened to in a long time, it tells the story of a love almost all dog lovers will recognise to some degree. It's a story of unconditional love and devotion between Katherine and a puppy she saved from certain death.

Katherine was involved in a car accident that resulted in the loss of her unborn child, she and her husband were both highly competitive and career-orientated but they both looked forward to the birth of their very much-wanted baby. But after the accident and their mutual loss their marriage ended.

Katherine moved on and at the start of this story is a very successful consultant in an investment brokerage, her career is her sole focus in life. That is until one chilly morning while out jogging beside the river she hears a sound and sees a burlap bag hitting the water, it had just been thrown from a bridge. She could hear noise coming from the bag which contained a litter of tiny puppies, as the bag was sinking into the icy river water, she jumped in to retrieve the sack. She takes the bag and its precious contents home and tries to save the puppies, unfortunately, all but one dies. Katherine forms an unbreakable bond with the surviving puppy and names him Odin. Despite not having wanted a dog and with no prior experience as a pet owner she's determined to dedicate herself to giving Odin her love and finding a better work-life balance for herself.

Odin becomes the centre of her world and the rambunctious, loyal and highly intelligent black Labrador-cross returns her love tenfold. Odin’s loyalty, intuition, quiet confidence, bravery and love are obvious to the listener. I couldn't help loving him too. He loves their daily walks and learns every inch of the woods surrounding their home. He even loves the water, despite nearly drowning as a pup. He has an incredible sense of smell and uses scents to recognise people, he remembers their identifying characteristics, giving him the ability to help save the life of Isabel, a little girl abducted from a park,

When Katerine's ex-husband Roger comes back into her life Odin recognises his love for Katherine and he and Odin form a bond because of their mutual love for the woman at the centre of both their lives. When Katherine and Roger re-marry he has two humans in his life but his loyalty to Katherine is paramount.

But even Odin couldn't save Katherine from every danger and following a violent attack Katherine who appeared at first to recover fully, seems to then suffer lingering ailments. Then everything changes for Odin and Roger.

The author's writing style gives readers insight into Odin’s mind and shows how his entire existence is dedicated to protecting Katherine at all costs. Riano gives the same amount of time to the thoughts of Odin as he does to the humans in this story. I've already said it's a moving story and listeners should be aware there are some sensitive topics, child abuse/abduction, bullying, name-calling, and victimization. But we also see the benefit of support animals in helping children cope with trauma.

The narration of this wonderfully moving and well-written story is beautifully performed by Jeff Fairchild, who brings every aspect of this intricate story to life.

One more word of warning though - have plenty of tissues handy! If I had been reading this book I would have had to stop because of the tears, both happy and sad that I cried.
