Summary

Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom, we find an important corrective to this view.

Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage—primarily to promote holiness of the husband and wife, and only secondarily to produce children.

Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting. While parts of Chrysostom's sermons may seem limited to his own time, the vast majority of his advice has timeless relevance for the Christian family.

A must read especially prior to marriage

This book is a must read especially prior to marriage but also for the married too. I say prior to marriage because its important to avoid pitfalls on your way in. I say during marriage so you can see where you're currently going wrong and examine your own beginnings of marriage and how to rectify any problems you have. This is a book great for priests looking to form newlyweds and instruct them prior to marriage. it demonstrates to them that the devilish customs of old are not much different to today and that if they're really doing it right then St.John will let them know. I wish I could have picked up this book before I married. Alas! although I am late to the party of John's delicious words of wisdom on this subject I am nevertheless grateful that I have discovered it, if not for my sake then at least that of my two sons. Read this book alongside the audible for ultimate absorption of wisdom and to maintain your full attention to good advice. God bless.
