Teorien, der længe har været kendt stof i Sverige, fejes af bordet i første kapitel af Paul Smiths mesterlige krimi om Palme-mordet: Palme blev ikke skudt, fordi Christer Petterson forvekslede ham med Sigge Cedergren. Tværtimod havde Christer og Sigge det bedste forhold, da Palme blev myrdet.
Olof Palmes virkelig morder havde et hævnmotiv, boede 15 minutters gang fra mordstedet og ejede en Smith & Wesson .357 magnumrevolver af samme type som mordvåbenet. Derimod havde han intet alibi for mordaftenen.
