Summary

'Perhaps the greatest living American crime writer' Stephen King

After the Carusos family home is destroyed by police with a no-knock warrant, the family struggle to return to normal.

Two former inmates reunite on a TV set. They're both back on the straight and narrow ... until one sees the potential for an easy grift.

A teenage boy must step into the man he'd like to be as a hostage crisis grips his hometown.

A woman adrift meets a man tied to her grandmother's past, and awakens to the bloody history of the place she grew up.

Pelecanos' portraits are characterized by shades of grey, resisting the mold of heroes and villains, victims and perpetrators, good and evil. At once streetwise and full of heart, Owning Up grapples with random chance, the bind of consequence, and the forked paths a life can take.

Classis Pelecanos

I loved the 'simplicity' of these four novellas as they charted the lives of Washingtonian inhabitants growing up, finding themselves and navigating moral and legal choices. There's history here too and much to learn about the inequalities of life for many as they struggled for acceptance and civil rights. Many men fought in overseas wars for their country and yet were denied basic rights and respect upon their return. Pelecanos covers all this and more. He really is a master storyteller.

Touchingly outstanding

A wonderful character driven collection of stories partly autobiographical that shines a light on history but with a heartfelt touch. It showcases how far George Pelecanos has come with his writing and outlook. Recommended

Disappointed

I love this author but this set of four short stories was a big disappointment. They felt like tryout plots for TV series and I found them completely un-engaging
