Summary
Years after a strategic attack killed millions and left the twelve states of the Midwest in darkness, the nation struggles to rise from the ashes. After a surprise ambush in Springfield, Missouri sets in motion a deadly chain of events, Miles Arrington leaves for Branson to aid militia in a life-or-death mission.
As communities fall, and survivors turncoat, it’s not long before panic ensues. While Gunnar Nelson and Arianna narrowly escape enemy troops, Miles discovers a horrifying truth about August and a secret that may change the course of this fight forever.

Entertaining
I really enjoyed this book, it was fast paced, action packed with some shocking plot twists. it captured my attention from the beginning. The characters were memorable, particularly Miles, I can't wait for book 3 to find out whats next for him, the narration by Chris Monteiro was great. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Second of the Outlaws of the Midwest trilogy.
I received this book via a promo code and this is my honest voluntary review.
Book 2 picks up a few weeks/months where Chaos Erupts left off. Miles and Gunnar are still witht the militia fighting the good fight against their enemies in the PLA and Mayor Morgan Jefferies, the mini king of Collaborators in Camdenton. Team Archer is outmanned and outgunned despite their small victories, they know they must expand beyond their strained relationship with Arianna to defeat the Chinese and Russians. Difficult with the mistrust and uncertainty everyone has as allies turn traitor or meet their ends via a mercenary group called Death Dealers led by Santiago. Forming a new Alliance, the duo go all out to inspire the American people and rescue the Presidents Daughter from their enemies homebase, hoping to prompt the hiding Government to rejoin the fight. Despite any wins or gains Miles makes in securing new ground, it is the revelation of what happens with August that shakes him to the core.
Narration by Chris Monteiro and if I hadn't been familiar with Jack Hunt's previous works, I would have got this for the excellent narration alone.

"You can't get lard unless you boil a hog."
This is an unusual post apocalyptic story, well written, proposing a situation where America has been invaded by Chinese troops some five years previously and the war was still continuing through various opposition forces, including a malitia. Certain personalities have achieved near mythical status, one of whom, the Hunter, is a main character in this story as he, with others, continues to battle for the right to stay alive.
Panic Ensues is the second of the Outlaws of the Midwest trilogy. Unfortunately, book one was not available on Audible so the audible reader is thrown straight into the story without the build up background, and it takes a little while to untangle what has gone before in order that the current book can be fully appreciated. Because of this, one star in the rating has been deducted. Not only the ongoing story but also characterization is built on book one. It is a tribute to the author that even with so much missing, this was an exciting and involving read. The ending is both surprising and encourages a strong desire to move on to book three.
Narration is by Chris Monteiro - a fine performance, clear, well paced and invested fully in the story. His voice is pleasant with good modulation and he gives individual voicing for all of the characters. Mr.Monteiro's reading adds to the pleasure of the book. I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Panic Ensues, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. I hope that the audio book of the first in this series will be available soon, and with it also book three, which I definitely intend to read. Recommended.
