Summary
Book one in the Bequin series.
Listen to it because:
It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.
The story:
In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

Outstanding, loved it.
What a great book/performance, Believe it or not this is my first Black Library audible book that's narrated by a Woman, Helen Keely does a magnificent job doing this and shes worlds apart from the bad narration by Martyn Ellis in The Thousand Sons, a book so bad i had to return it.
I immediately thought this sounded like the Eisenhorn novels in its narration, And was confused at first but I haven't read the Ravenor series.
When I heard the last sentence i spat my coffee over my work laptop.
Just purchased book 2, but reading the Ravenor Series first.
Abnett, you sly dog, keep it up fella .

outstanding
I actually struggled the first time I read this and the precursor, pariah in hardback - but on audible, I ate both up and found the performance really engaging.
built the world in its acting as much as Dan abnetts words, and I can't wait for the next one

A great story but the vocals failed
Everything in this book is awesome it’s just the narrators male voices that massively lets it down even tho the females voices are good the majority of characters talking around the main character are men and the narrator simply doesn’t have the vocals to do their voices justice. There is so many characters coming back for a show in this story and you can’t recognize their voices threw her voice. So if you’ve read threw the whole eisenhorn and ravenor series read by Toby longworth and then come to this book you will be massively disappointed by the voices the female narrator is simply unable to do male voices properly.

Worth getting used to the new reader.
Tough to get used to Eisenhorn and Ravenor not being voices by Toby, and the new reader doesn't have quite as many convincing voices to use but still a solid performance and perhaps most intriguing story so far in the Eisenhorn series.

awsome
amazing. probably my favourite dan Annette novel so far. voice actor was brilliant to but could maybe use another actor for the male voices as they all started sounding the same towards the end but I suppose they all do when there's lots of characters

Simply put its outstanding
Over the short term I have been reading BL books I have heard much said of Eisenstein and Ravenor and having tried and failed to engage with those books I was reluctant to start pariah, I am so glad I did, the story is excellent the narration outstanding and as soon I finished I started straight into pentinent

Brilliant.
Awesome, Abnett at his best, aided by a great read by Helen Keeley. A twisting story where the truth is illusionary.

Great addition to the existing books/lore.
I didn’t know which direction the book would take at first and was a bit wary. I was wrong to be however, brilliantly written and acted good addition to the eisenhorn/ravenor books.
Definitely worth your time if you’re already familiar with the characters and if you’re not I think that could actually improve the book by adding to the intrigue. Either way I would recommend it.
Only slight downside is the fact it is clearly written as part of a series and not it’s stand alone story, so the ending won’t be satisfying if you don’t intend to go through all the books.
