Summary

“Because us? Psychopaths and Sinners...we don’t need fixing, Gray.” (Martin)

Three bodies, three mutilations, each one with something...unusual inserted into the wounds. The deaths are enough to leave Ash Thomas scrambling around to find someone to trust as the murders hit so close to home and heart.

For Gray Raoul, MI5 director of G-Branch, the deaths offer something else: A fall back into a familiar life where culling serial killers caters to his own darker mindset. But the farther Gray moves away from home, the more he realises serial killer games in the field are nothing compared to who he has locked up back at home. Sometimes walking the fine line between psychopaths and live-in lovers is a far darker game.

For Ash, that might just mean he’s on his own now, facing a killer who has a deadly fascination for dangerous young men and dancing holly blue butterflies over their skin.

What an amazing ride

First of all, no spoilers in this review.

It’s always hard to know what to say when reviewing one of these audio books other than “WOW”, Between Jack’s complex and enthralling story line and then adding Dan’s ability to give voices to and bring to life the formidable cast of characters, Jack L Pyke and Dan Calley make a formidable duo, and one I can’t wait to hear more from.

This is a book which pulls so much together from the older Don’t characters and the new kids on the block and intertwined them so well it’s as if they’ve always been there in the wings, waiting for their chance to step forward.

The opening chapter literally pulled at my heartstrings, making it ache as the events unfolded. The way my stomach dropped hearing one particular character speak was something that will stay with me, and as I’ve already said it’s the combination of brilliantly portrayed events and emotions, and the right person breathing life into them while I was reduced to nothing more than a spectator. This set the stage for what would be an amazing ride which didn’t let up until the very end.

While this book centres around the “Holly Blue” killer, don’t thinks you’re going to miss out on the characters you love as you’re treated to all the “Don’t” favourites characters while being introduced to who new set of people. Every chapter brought something new, from Ash and Raif, to Gray, Jan and of course Martin who has lost none of him usual “charm”.

Some secrets are uncovered while others remain buried deep, waiting to be revealed. The range of accents in this are also amazing, from real local and colloquial to my person favourite, Mr Raoul’s clipped tones. While there were so many players on the board in some scenes, it was so easy to detect who was talking without losing track of becoming confused.

While this isn’t a short book (a total positive for me!), the ride is well worth taking, and I actually can’t wait to be able to embark on my Don’t marathon listening session.

Thank you for bringing not only these men into my life, but for breathing life into them.

Leaves you craving for more

Jack L Pyke does it again. And again. These series… [sigh] and then this latest instalment. If I could describe in one word it would outstanding.

It really is. The mystery murder thriller in this is astonishingly well written. It’s as if the author keeps the reader in imaginary bondage until the story is finished. And then we are left craving more. I called Jack’s books an addiction before because they really are. Impossible to put down while totally anxious for what’s to come. And just when you think you have it all figured out, Myles comes in through the door. IYKYK.

All in all, Psychopaths and Sinners is there on the top shelf of all of the series. I loved how the two story lines were woven together and just worked so incredibly well. I loved how much more depth we are shown to the old characters, and at the same time how much depth is revealed in the new ones.

And then Dan and his narration? I mean. I am beyond words when it comes to Dan. His tones, the accents, the pace, the performance. Standing ovation. Every. Single. Time.

What a thrilling suspense

I know when I start listening to Jack L Pyke’s books I can’t do anything but sit open mouthed with surprise and eagerness to find out what happens next. This suspense driven story was no different. I would definitely recommend listening to Ash (book 4.5) before this one. Ash introduces the characters that are central to this story. There are a lot of twists and turns with parallel storylines, involving Jack/Martin Jan and Grey. I am so caught up in these stories and I can’t wait for the next one. I will be listening to the series over again, they are so involved I know I’ll always find something new in them.
Dan Calley performs this book perfectly. I am drawn into the story and the characters he has given a new dimension to. I look forward to listening to books narrated by him.

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, I’m over the half, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Wow

This one has just left me, I don’t know speechless in awe, amazed? Everything. This series is one that has kept me awake just amazed at the skilful way that the characters and storyline have been carefully woven together. The way each part leaves me wanting more but anxious for the characters

WoW

The best so far

This book introduced more characters which gave it a slightly different feel than the other books, it was truly one of the best books in a long while.

The characters are so intriguing and interesting their personal and professional battles are really well depicted and I’m in awe of the Jack L Pyke

Dan Calley has out done himself with the performance, it was strong, compassionate and a powerful performance. Dan’s voice is compelling and I couldn’t stop listening, if you don’t listen to any other book than this one you will not regret it

next in the series - wow

I'm hooked!

Mostly Ash and Raif's story with Grey. Jack/Martin and Jan.

Yes, this is a series and not a standalone. Should read Ash. The prequel before this book.
Can't wait for the next book.

Dark thriller

Great narration.
