Summary
Matt Hunter lost his faith a long time ago. Formerly a minister, now a professor of sociology, he’s writing a book that debunks the Christian faith while assisting the police with religiously motivated crimes.
On holiday with his family in Oxfordshire, Matt finds himself on edge in a seemingly idyllic village, but when a local girl goes missing, he's caught up in an investigation that brings memories to the surface he would prefer to stay buried deep…He must draw on his theological knowledge to catch the killer.

Brilliant
I really enjoyed this book it's dark and hopeful, tense and funny and time flies by. The world created is so recognisable as our own yet slightly mysterious and strange. I am starting the second book immediately. Can't wait you scooby doofus

Purged
I had actually read The Frighteners several times before realising that these books were also 'out there'. Unfortunately they don't seem to be available on Kindle and my eyesight doesn't let me read 'ordinary' books so I had to rely on the audio version. Well, thank god for this narrator! He is absolutely perfect for the story, which is proper edge-of-the-seat stuff, and coming from a different angle than we see usually. Love the sense of humour in here - the slight absurdist humour that appears out of nowhere, as it does no matter how stressed and tense you are. It makes things more realistic. Thoroughly enjoyed this and am happily going to leap into book 2. Really recommended.

Gripping until the last
A great well paced thrilling story with engaging and likeable characters. My 'must read' of 2017. Can't wait to read more featuring Matt Hunter and more by the excellent author Peter Laws.

A profound, disturbing and addictive read.
Religion comes into a lot of novels, especially in the horror genre, and usually it's a reaction to main story or is part of the background. In Purged, religion is central, but it isn't Christianity that is put under the microscope, it's people's reactions and actions motivated by beliefs and the different ways they behave in order to express their beliefs or 'save' others, as well as the preconceptions we all hold towards spiritual beliefs not our own.
Peter Laws is uniquely placed to explore these themes and has delivered a profound, disturbing and addictive read. I loved it!

Great story
Really enjoyed the book, great story, wonderful characters and a wonderful glimpse in to the mind of the disturbed minister who wrote it. I will be listening to the rest.

Slow and Steady
Listened to this after seeing Peter Laws on his YouTube channel. Very slow to begin with, with a lot of religious references. Which I get as the author and main character are ex ministers, but felt like just a few too many references.
Once the story kicked in couldn’t stop listening, the pace picked up and it rattled along.
Will get the second in the series to see how characters develop.
