About this listen

Please enjoy listening to this thrilling British detective caper.

When Cruft's Best of Breeds Champion mysteriously disappears from his enclosure, the finger of suspicion points at the owner of a rival kennel.

Although Somerset police find the missing Scottish terrier's dermal tracker, they cannot find further evidence of a crime. Having no proof, they are unable to do anything and drop any investigations.

The other dogs call in Ratchet and Stench, and even though they uncover clues that suggest a brutal murder, the animal sleuths aren't convinced.

Brilliant for Kids (of all ages!)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

To any of my friends with kids, it's a must... Mine were hooked; and just had to know what would happen as the story progressed.

Who was your favorite character and why?

They're all fun, but I like the Somerset (Zumerrrzet) Badger "Ratchet"

What about Simon Blood DeVay’s performance did you like?

Even though his voice is very deep and distinctive - not neutral like many impressionists - he manages to give all the characters a distinct and appropriate sound... Pearl's especially entertaining.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

If you have a problem... if no one else can help... and if you can find them... maybe you can hire... Ratchet & Stench!

Any additional comments?

Ideal, contemporary storytelling.

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

As long as they had kids (and quite probably if they didn't)! A manageable length, my kids took it in 2 hits. Funny, not glaringly obvious either and the characters are very different and all fully-formed.

What did you like best about this story?

We loved how we were genuinely concerned at the halfway point, and that the ending was only similar in parts to what was predicted/expected. A perfect balance of making you think without losing the younger audience.

Have you listened to any of Simon Blood DeVay’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Having heard a more "grown-up" work read by him, this actually demanded much more of him in terms of voices, ages, species and accents! A lot of work, executed brilliantly :D

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! But, for the kids' sake I couldn't listen to the other half before they were ready for it too.

Any additional comments?

I titled this review "Don't Judge... Cover" as the book jacket/graphic isn't nearly as cool or "grabbing" as this most excellent tale deserves...
