Summary

An epic military adventure novel pits Roman army heroes Macro and Cato against Boudica: the terrifying Queen of the Britons. From bestselling Simon Scarrow, author of Death to the Emperor and The Honour of Rome

1st-century Britannia is the setting for an epic and action-packed novel of tribal uprisings, battles to the death and unmatched courage in the Roman army ranks.

The 22nd Eagles of the Empire novel.

Two heroes of the Roman army - Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro, now battle-scarred veterans, tough and resilient - lead their best men into the midst of an enemy both fearless and resourceful. Far from Rome in cold, rainy, unwelcoming Britannia, the soldiers need all their training to stand strong and undaunted as constant attacks challenge morale. And a leader like no other sends fear through the ranks: Boudica.

A stunning and unforgettable story of warfare, courage and sacrifice as brave men face an enemy who will fight to the death to free her people from the rule of the Empire!

A rebellion to warrant a statue

Love the eagles of Rome aeries and enjoyed rhis book. Felt the survival of Macro was a bit contrived and a little unrealistic, but it did give good commentaryon the Iceni camp. I would have liked more from the Iceni side during the final battle to give their side of the story here, but then suppose specialised Boudicca novel will do this. As ever the narration of Jonathan Keeble is exceptional and I actively seek out the audiobooks he voices.

Best Yet!

Wow. They are just getting better and better. I have read the series back to back in about a year lol. Scarrow's depth has been an evolving joy. Belly laughs, excitement, and moist eyes. Cannot wait for the next one (I bet Julia pops up somewhere!) Jonathan Keeble takes on the different characters brilliantly and gets across the inflexions 100%, well done sir and keep with it!

Vivid depiction of the Iceni Uprising

Occupied Britain from the perspectives of the Romans, the settlers and the indigenous people was powerfully described. As was the military manoeuvring - Macro and Cato were in the thick of it. This novel was more nuanced, less action-film style.

Fabulously written and brilliantly narrated

Cato and Macro are up to their necks in trouble with political intrigue and treacherous officials. This book is so well written and narrated that it takes you back 2000 years and inserts you into the story. Brilliant five stars.

Exciting and thrilling as ever

Another exciting instalment of the Macro and Cato series sets them in Britannia against former friend and ally, Boudicca. This harks back to the original books, and the author finds a neat and believable way to extract other characters from the story, so we don’t worry about them. I was saddened by some losses as would have liked to see those characters develops further. Otherwise a thrilling story that keep me listening long into the early hours.
