Summary
A breathtaking exploration of memory and what it means to be human, Recursion is the follow-up novel to the smash-hit thriller Dark Matter, by Blake Crouch.
What if someone could rewrite your entire life?
'My son has been erased.'
Those are the last words the woman tells Barry Sutton before she leaps from the Manhattan rooftop. Deeply unnerved, Barry begins to investigate her death, only to learn that this wasn’t an isolated case. All across the country, people are waking up to lives different than the ones they fell asleep to. Are they suffering from False Memory Syndrome, a mysterious, new disease that afflicts people with vivid memories of a life they never lived? Or is something far more sinister behind the fracturing of reality all around him?
Miles away, neuroscientist Helena Smith is developing a technology that allows us to preserve our most intense memories and relive them. If she succeeds, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss, the birth of a child, the final moment with a dying parent.
Barry’s search for the truth leads him on an impossible, astonishing journey as he discovers that Helena’s work has yielded a terrifying gift - the ability not just to preserve memories but to remake them...at the risk of destroying what it means to be human.
Critic reviews
"Recursion takes mind-twisting premises and embeds them in a deeply emotional story about time and loss and grief and most of all, the glory of the human heart." (Gregg Hurwitz, international best-selling author of Orphan X)
"A fantastic read." (Andy Weir, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Martian)

Good story, gets a little confusing.
I liked this story, at times it was very fast paced and I couldn't stop but with the complex nature of the story and listening on work commutes it was sometimes hard to pick up where you left off.
Narration was excellent!

Absolutely amazing
I'm amazed that more people haven't recommended this to me. And when I tell friends into SciFi, although they know the author, they don't know the book.
Which is odd, because it's absolutely brilliant.

Interesting premise
My first audiobook by this author who maybe wrote it with one eye on a film/TV series deal???
The narration was excellent and I suspect that this story is probably easier to follow as an audiobooks than in print ... the idea of being able to record and even change memories is intriguing but is not explored in any real depth because the story is essentially a thriller ... even so, I enjoyed it and will try other books by this author.

Stunner
I absolutely loved this book. The performances are reserved, almost minimal but perfectly suit the story.. and what a story. Complicated, confusing, entertaining and frankly brilliant.
Helena and Barry are great leads and the story, whilst obviously scientifically nonsense asks great questions of about the rights and wrongs of changing the past to improve the future and the implications of creating something which could potentially devastate the world.
In short, I think this may be one of my favourite books I have ever read or had read to me.

Rollercoaster of a journey
Such a brilliant book. I found myself hooked by both the performance and the concept of the story. Well worth a listen.

Best book I’ve ever read. Like a Nolan movie
I bought this off the back of Andy Weir mentioning it was his favourite most recent book. I’d just finished Project Hail Mary so was looking for more sci fi to fill in the void.
But WOAH. Not for one second did I think it would be the best thing I’d ever read.
It took a while to get going and gel my senses to the characters and voice actors, but once I was there and the story started sprawling it just got better and better and better.
Thank you, Blake Crouch for introducing a time travel element of sci fi that is better than any that’s preceded it.

Engrossing and original
I was gripped from chapter 1, and although it was hard at times to understand the plot listening to, as opposed to reading, this novel, I just had to rewind a few times to be sure I'd understood the time shifts and unfolding events.

Phenomenonal!
My new favorite author. This is better than dark matter imho and that is an amazing book and my first read by him. This man takes complicated physics and weaves a poignant, dramatic and reflective killer of a novel. Right up there!!!

He's done it again!
Another wonderful, engrossing and edgy thriller that keeps you intrigued. Only downside is I don't know which of his books to download next.
Truly.
