Summary

At forty-three Jeff Winston is tired of his low-paid, unrewarding job, tired of the long silences at the breakfast table with his wife, saddened by the thought of no children to comfort his old age. But he hopes for better things, for happiness, maybe tomorrow ...

But a sudden, fatal heart attack puts paid to that. Until Jeff wakes up in his eighteen-year-old body, all his memories of the next twenty-five years intact. If he applies those memories, he can be rich in this new chance at life and can become one of the most powerful men in America.

Until he dies at forty-three and wakes up in his eighteen-year-old body again ... and again in a continuous twenty-five year cycle each time starting from scratch at the age of eighteen to reclaim lost loves, make a fortune - or remedy past mistakes.

A novel of gripping adventure, romance, and fascinating speculation on the nature of time, Replay asks the question: "What if you could live your life over again?"

Critic reviews

"In 1986 (seven years before the release of the film Groundhog Day), Grimwood published this riveting novel about a man who dies of a heart attack and then wakes up in his college dorm room 25 years earlier. He discovers that he has the chance to live his life over again. And again. And again. This is one of the most elegant and moving time travels stories ever written. A thrilling adventure that also explores the nature of destiny and the human experience." (Ernest Cline, author of READY PLAYER ONE)

"I didn't just love Replay, I believed in it, I dreamed of it ... I also discovered that I wasn't only believer; at the time, there were fan sites dedicated to Replay. Hundreds of people - like the fellow replayers we never realize are out there - were all dreaming my same dream" (Brad Meltzer)

Epic!!!!

I absolutely loved this book, listened to it in two days and hated having to take breaks.
Best time travel book I've read.
Gone straight into my top books of all time.
I usually start another straight away, but I feel like I need time to settle down after finishing this one.

an enjoyable book about timetravel. nothing amazing, but good

this book took a while to get going, the first half was too focused on a side of the story which was predictable and not too interesting.

after the half way mark the story began to grow and peak my interest, although it kept my interest or the remainder of the story, it never climbed to the heights i was hoping for.

gives food for thought but won't be reading again as it feels like a 1 time only.

i feel the writer brought sex into the story a lot more than needed and became a bit stale causing me to roll my eyes whenever the next sex scene came along.

give it a 7/10, could of been a lot better with some further thought

Fantastic book.

Really makes you think about your life. I don't think there are many other books with the same premise, can't believe it was written in 1986 it doesn't feel dated at all.

A little dark emotionally but very good.

Your life over and over again, with the knowledge you have staying with you. Sounds good , until it doesn't stop and things don't always go how you're hoping. A very good, deep book. A constant loop, life over and over again. When life isn't as precious, is it as enjoyable? Struggled at first with the narrator, he narrated a book I found extremely depressing, but once I got past that he was very good. Enjoyable book, a little sad and deep but worth it.

Great story and doesn't feel dated

Had no idea this was written in the 80s until I looked it up afterwards. I suspected based on the story's timeline but it felt too modern to be so.

Really enjoyed this one

Thought provoking, one not to miss

I read this initially as some one said it was similar to the time travellers wife, my favourite book of all time. At first I nearly sent it back as I found the sex references old, out dated and crude...but I am glad I didn’t. It has been the most interesting books I have read this year. Well written, fast flowing. The reader is really good at different character voices too. Makes you pick apart your own life, and how time influences it.
Any way, if you are thinking about getting it, go for it.

Outstanding

The first book in a very long time to capture my imagination and full attention. I am so glad that the main subject matter of this story remained a mystery. There was no cheap attempt to rationalise the phenomenon. It was just what it was and it was brilliant! I’ll never forget this one.
