Summary

Theo, star pilot wannabe and troubled misfit has been accepted, against all her expectations, to Anlingdin. It’s the Hogwarts of star piloting academies, and Theo has been selected to train there with the best-of-the-best. Even better - she can finally leave behind the gawky, misfit days of teenage angst her previous life so complicated before. Great Liaden star pilots are born with a bang and not a whimper - and Theo has set a course to graduate from misfit to genuine maverick.

Next generation in the Liaden World

The Liaden world has a complex, multi-layered mythology. This is soft space opera with a family twist. As in other series by these authors, the calling of "pilot" is exalted. Occasionally slow-moving, multi-thread narratives switch from one focus to the next and require some engagement to keep track. In this instalment, conflicts start to build for the main character against the backdrop of a society slipping into authoritarianism.

The read on the Waitley books is well paced, with fairly good character differentiation. There are some odd pronunciations, but they are few and far between and will probably not bother everyone.

Overall, a satisfying experience.
