Summary
BONNIE GARMUS, author of LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY
'It was such a pleasure to bury myself in this book, a literary novel of family life which moved and surprised me' CLARE CHAMBERS, author of SMALL PLEASURES
'Such a wonderful book . . . It absolutely floored me. What a joy to let a writer of such talent suffuse us with a life's worth of humour and pain, affection and mess'
JESSIE BURTON, author of THE MINIATURIST
'A family saga to save as a treat and devour when you should be doing something else'
INDEPENDENT
At fifty-seven, Julia Ames has found herself with an improbably lovely life. Despite her inclination towards self-sabotage, she has a husband she loves, two happy children and a quiet, contented existence in the suburbs.
But, out of the blue, things begin to change.
Her always well-behaved son is acting strangely. Her beloved but belligerent teenage daughter is about to depart for college.
And, in the local grocery store, Julia encounters a woman she hasn't seen for twenty years - a woman whose friendship was once both her lifeline and, very nearly, her downfall.
All of a sudden, Julia's peaceful family setup and her long, affection-filled marriage face imminent derailment from events both past and present.
The author of The Most Fun We Ever Had returns with another brilliantly observed family drama, which examines the complete and complicated trajectory of one woman's life and asks what it takes to make - and to not break - a family.

Mesmerisingly beautiful writing
I have looked forward to this novel wver since reading Claire Lombardo's first novel and I wasn't disappointed. The interior dialogue of the main character combined with the interactions and dialogue between her and others felt more real than I knew writing could feel. The author has a way capturing the unspoken truths that exist without most of us even notice. I loved the characters and story, but only slight unhappiness is with how the novel finishes but I suspect this is a subjective and perhaps unpopular opinion. What an incredible author though, will now await the next!

Loved this
A great follow up to her great debut most fun we’ve ever had. A family saga following the life of the mother Julia and how her childhood and relationship with her mother shapes the way she raised her children, her marriage with her husband and friendships. This book is beautiful and yes it’s too long.

Noooooo
I have waited for the release of this book for so long, having loved the authors first book.
Alas, I found the first half tedious and bland. Which is not to say there wasn’t depth. There is. It’s just takes a long time to say so little.

Overflowing with real emotion
I loved how this was a simple story of a woman’s life but the nuances and attention to detail made it completely relatable. The feelings a mother has for her child that never change made me laugh and cry because I could relate to this completely. A perfect bedtime listen.
