Summary

Seventy-nine is too late for a second chance. Isn’t it?

Missy Carmichael is prickly, stubborn – and terribly lonely. Until a chance encounter in the park with two very different women opens the door to something new. Something wonderful. Missy was used to her small, solitary existence, listening to her footsteps echoing around the empty house, the tick-tick-tick of the watching clock. After all, she had made her life her way.

Now another life is beckoning to Missy – if she’s brave enough....

Beautifully written

Saving Missy is a lovely gentle story about elderly Missy who is lost and lonely but who manages to find multiple friendships with an array of wonderfully drawn characters (not least Missy herself). Her tale is heartbreaking in places, but ultimately heart warming with Missy’s earlier life cleverly weaved with the present. I loved this book, its writing rich and meditative along with the excellent narration. If you loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, then this study of the protagonist finding her way through loneliness is for you.

A surprising joy

I really enjoyed this marvellously eloquent book, belied by its cover, which led me to expect something in the ‘chick lit’ genre. An unexpected pleasure! I came away with some new words (uxorious among others) and some memorable and beautiful phrases (my song returned). Harriet Walter is an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Missy, does not miss out.

I note someone reviewed this book and said it was trying to be a Joanna Cannon or Emma Healey book in an Eleanor Oliphant style.

Firstly I would like to say that Emma Healeys Elizabeth is missing and Eleanor Oliphant are marvelous books dealing sensitively with Alzheimer’s and the autistic spectrum respectively.
Joanne Cannon I know has her fans but for me she is trying too hard to please the masses.

This book Saving Missy is so different than the above, it is about an elderly lady who is primarily lonely, her grown up children are getting on with their lives now. She gave up a promising career for her husband and children and yes I suppose she is a bit spikey around the edges.

What is different is that Missy reflects on her past which the book beautifully weaves back and forth over time and another story is told. Missy in her dotage réalisés she wants to be part of life again but feels she will just get in the way or bring little to others lives which is unfortunately what quite a few elderly people feel.

The book is full of warmth and looks frankly and humerously at our stereotypes of single mums, the elderly, lesbians, homosexuals and the misfits of society and how they are all part of a puzzle that would not be a whole community if they were not all in it.

The book is gentle and easy to listen to and full of charm.

Lastly the narration by Harriet Walker is exceptional, her breadth of voices male, female, young and old with various régional dialects is outstanding and took this book to a whole new level.

Thoroughly recommend.
