About this listen
Of all the Legiones Astartes, the White Scars of Jaghatai Khan remain the most enigmatic and elusive. Do not skip - Essential and gripping White Scars and Primarch lore
I actually skipped this one but went back to it after a few books - and thank god I did. This is a really good addition to the HH series, and probably in my top five. First proper close up look at the WS, and fills in a nice gap. I blasted through it very quickly. Some awesome primarch content here, and the perspective of everything unfolding from the WS pov - and doesn’t labour on old ground too much either, but paces it really well. A nice mortal character in it as well. As with all the HH books it has an excellent and rewarding climax.
Only thing I’d criticise sometimes is the production, how it skips too quickly into another plot line and you need a moment to understand that it’s changed to another characters story. I wish they’d take a bit more of a breath before doing that. However, not a major issue.

Better story telling than most 40k
The narration is vey good and the story is enjoyable. Not too much boring fighting. I struggled a bit at times following everything as it jumps about a bit. There were a lot of good moments.

Up there with Betrayer!
Shogo Miyakita is now my favourite narrator. I wasn’t sure about the Vth legion, or if I’d like this book. It’s my 27th and there’s been real highs (Betrayer, the initial 4 books, anything with Loken), so I thought ‘why not’. Turns out the White Scars are now a fixture in my 30k interests. The story is great - really explores the nature of Vth and their relations with other legions, as well as the confusion after Istvaan. The characters are complex and even the final showdown (no spoilers), while inevitable, feels well put together and fated. But the real standout is Miyakita - he reads at a different pace to others, but this gives the book real gravitas and I like how the characters are portrayed - it’s a really welcome (and pleasantly surprising) departure from the equally brilliant Keeble, Longworth et al.
Strongly, strongly recommended. I’ve listened to 2 other books more than once - Betrayer, the First Heretic and this will absolutely be my third.

Difficult book to review....
....first off the good. The narrator was excellent, lots of lovely detail on the White Scars a criminally under developed chapter in my opinion, no more are they just Space Wolves on bikes. So full marks for all the chapter fluff and a little more detail on the development and cancellation of the librarian marines and more Primarch interactions both in the past and present (from the novel's point of view).
All that said why haven't I given it five stars? Well as the reader you spend most of this book following the White Scars as they piece together (slowly at times) who they can trust having been isolated away from the imperium during the early actions of the heresy. Now for anyone who has read the previous Heresy books....you already know who they can trust and ultimately who they do. This results in a very pedestrian pace with very little action when compared to many of the other Heresy books. It also feels a little redundant to revisit lodges and schisms within a chapter now we are quite far into the series. Though initially interesting the lodges story doesn't really pan out as particularly exciting with an all too obvious ending and for me personally has way too much time dedicated to it for no real pay off.
All in I find it hard to fully recommend this book as a must read....but also think that there are enough notable details that for completeness sake if you are a fan of the series it shouldn't be missed....so in summary three out of five stars.
