Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based - and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.
Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology - and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-listen for parents - and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.
Scattered Minds:
- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay
- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy - and why
- Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience
- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours
- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood
- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

Life changing book
This book has made such a difference to my life.
Clear and concise review, taking the reader through the journey of an individual with ADD.
Thank you Gabor Mate for taking the time to put together such a profound piece of work.

Definitely worth reading if you have ADHD
The most useful information for me was learning that a big reason why I am distracted is because my emotional needs aren’t being met.

What a book. As an ADHD adult, this book talked to me.
Every example, every story, every solution... it was like talking to an oracle who helps me understand my brain. I will be relistening again for sure.

Just brilliant!
I have never before heard someone describe what it is like to be in my brain, to live my daily struggles which seem so effortless to others. Truly brilliant, an excellent read/listen. I would, as always, love Gabor to narrate his own words as I find his voice so soothing, but ironically, it is most likely his ADD which makes this not possible. Daniel always does a great job in his father’s absence.

Love!
I’ve listened to The Myth of Normal and The Body Says No and I didn’t expect to be as engaged with this one as ADHD doesn’t directly impact me, but because it is actually mostly about attachment and schools I found it so relevant and it is not an exaggeration to say that I was “rewinding” a lot to re listen and absorb properly.

A personal perspective with medical insight
I liked the idea that ADD is neither an inherent disease nor results from inattentive parents. However, Mate recognises sensitivity as being a treat someone is born with and environmental factors play a part. A loving mother does not have to be inattentive but if she is suffering from anxiety or depression then the infant who cannot speak will be able to detect her feelings very strongly and this can have detrimental effects on his or her development. The book does not blame parent or child but sees a child with a sensitive disposition coupled with a mother who is suffering as being a victim of being underdeveloped. Medication and its merits are discussed but it is recognised that medication only masks the problem. It provides recommendations on how to help the ADD child and also how to re-parent self for the adult with ADD.

The perfect book to start, manage and overcome my ADHD
the brilliance and extent of ADHD understanding, delivered without judgement and with hope. I have suffered 55 years of undiagnosed ADHD. It is now understood and managed, with medication, ongoing therapy and exercise, both physical and mental. I am finally optimistic about my future and enjoying being somewhat more 'normal but without losing who I am.
