"...one of the few authentically good teachers out there. Every time I revisit my notes, I learn something new or reinforce something I needed to remember." (Jeff Arch, screenwriter Sleepless in Seattle)

The essentials for Hollywood screenwriting

This book is from a lecture so it's not as refined as "Save the Cat", it's also a bit short but it still feels like it covers everything you need to get going.
The narrator (the author) has a good voice. No vocal fry or any other annoyances.

Some of the tips in this book seems to be outdated, like subscribing to Hollywood magazines in order to find out who produced this and that movie.

The book is only 3 hours long so you can come back to it and that's part of the reason I recommend it.

Brilliant!

I'm someone intending to write my first screenplay and have been doing my study and research for a little while now. More than any screenwriting knowledge I been exposed to so far, what Michael Hauge has to say here really hits the spot. You ever get that feeling.. when somebody advises you in a way that makes complete and utter sense in a way it never did when explained by others before them? It's not just what he says, it's how he says it, it's his pacing, and especially some of the examples. Importantly, his advice strikes me as very honest. What's great is that this covers the 'end-to-end' of the process. No one element of knowledge will turn anybody into an expert, as screenwriting is a creative art and the boundaries are being pushed all of the time. However, if you want to know how to give yourself the best chance of getting your foot in the door, this would have to be it. It helps plenty that he is a very engaging speaker too.

Short and sweet

This is a quick listen, but its packed with great advice. The speaker is really engaging so it's very easy to listen to the whole thing in one go.

I would have liked to hear more from this or maybe even if there was a pdf of writing exercises or something it could have been worth five stars.

Recommended for people wanting to start out on a first screenplay.
