Summary

I wrote this novel in 1995, when medical genetics was starting to bloom. It was the beginning of gene identification to discover the causes of many inherited diseases. Prior to that time, there was no genetic research development to help doctors choose the appropriate drug to treat a particular disease.

I developed this story about drug manufacturers, genetic research companies, doctors, and hospitals all vying for the almighty buck. I became motivated through my observation of all these entities, watching how they were only interested in money and not in helping the sick. Through the story, I brought to bear genetic realities that have since come to the forefront.

Because organ transplants have been in such demand, I created a fictional new source for organ transplants by creating a pandemic of hepatitis D much like what is now happening in the world as a result of Covid-19. The patients depicted were all real and drawn from my actual hospital practice of internal medicine except for the pediatric cases. All illnesses, and the teaching of the premed students and the teaching of nurses, were actual.
