"Respect to the fallen."

Life was good. Rev was seventeen, soon to follow his step father into the Crystal build training when a minor traffic infringement had him brought before the judge. Expecting a fine, perhaps some sort of community service, he was horrified to find himself sentenced, without appeal, to a term of military service instead, time unspecified, to begin as soon as his eighteenth birthday had passed. This book is the story of his induction into the Marines and his early combat assignments.

The training aspect was enjoyable, though it has been done better in, for example, Terms of Enlistment by Marko Kloos, and the subsequent battles were novel, well written and engaging. Narration was by Jeffrey Kafer, always a pleasure to hear. The first of an already substantial series, I am not sure if I will continue despite enjoying this initial book - the characters did not quite appeal sufficiently to ensure my commitment. But it was a good story for those for whom military action holds more appeal than the actual science friction

Really enjoyed

Easy to listen to. Good story, wish each book was longer. Eases into the trilogy really well.

Great Listen

Well made Sci-Fi world with characters to match and an appropriate threat of humanity being wiped out ( this is pointed out early on, no spoiler ).

The narrater does a good job as well which is a big thing for me, I'm away to start the second book soon.

It's decent military sci-fi.

It's decent sci-fi and miltech. It's alright. Not bad. Not great. Better than meh. Less than good.

The story has some pretty glaring flaws with it, which is my main issue. Often the story takes wild leaps in logic, or shuts down all logic for plot purposes. You're repeatedly expected to just accept it. There's more than a few un/intentional jokes about this throughout the series, so I guess the author is expecting you to see them squint past it for the sake of story progression. Which is fine, I guess, but some are a little too out there or in your face and break the immersion.

Any way. Not a bad series. There are worse.
