Summary

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

Excellent Story

A really great story from Leigh Bardugo about magical powers and good versus evil. Narrated by Lauren Fort gang whose different voices for each character were extremely good. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in the Grishaverse. I love it when I start a new series of books that I enjoy this much because I know there are more books waiting to be read. This is definitely worth reading, you won't be disappointed.

Very uneventful

The performance saves the book… enough said.

There is not much going on in this story.
There is basically one main plot and a main character who has a lot of self confidance issues. This character soon discovers she is the chosen one..

Characters are very one dimensional.

The world building is actually very rich, I love the Czarist russian-like setting.

Shadow and Bridget Jones

Picked up this book after watching the excellent Netflix series 1. Was surprised to find the book and tv show are widely different with the TV show being a lot more fleshed out with characters brought forward from later books. I did enjoy the book, the narration is very good and many parts are very well written but there is just far far too much of the 'will they won't they' between Alina and Mal, Alina and the Darkling and Alina and the prince. So much so that it's infuriating, like an even more indecisive Bridget Jones. I may not have enjoyed this book as much if I'd not seen the TV show but I have picked up the second in the series so that says something.

Wonderful story

I love the story, it’s never boring and I’ll definitely be listening to the rest of the books in the series! The style of the writing however is.. vague.. I would say... in the sense that language or scene detail isn’t very deep.

listened befor watching to compare

Very teenage angst throughout the story on book more then on series, but on screen, the story is composed better hence more interesting.
Am undecided as to continuing to the next books.
Like the use of the mensing 'Fold' but much of the story line is found in many books, maybe a good book for young adventures on hormone craves!

Marvellous storytelling

Leigh Bardugo has built a world that I would not want to live in but that I enjoyed being taken to. What a fantastic story, this is book 1 and I am gripped, I can't wait to get stuck into books 2 and 3.

Mal, Alina, the Darkling, they world of the Grisha are all so well crafted as characters, places, people, a fantasy world that could very well be real and a story that has you wanting to never stop listening. Excellent narration by Lauren Fortgang too.

Great narrative and voice.

Really enjoy the story. Was hoping that each character to portray in a suitable voice or sound.

Good story but performance was missing something.

I enjoyed the story...I think. I felt that the reading was lacking. I think a story that has such action needed a more dramatic reading.
