About this listen
Shadows in the Wall, a novel by Derek Bates
Journalist Jake and actress Rhosa live together in Firenze House, which had been built by Jacob D’Arcy in the 16th century. They find letters behind a panel that reveal that Jacob D’Arcy had been involved in a plot to poison the pope.
Convinced that Jacob is communicating with them, they realize that even after four centuries, we are still dominated by elites. Jake devises an alternative democracy, to which he devotes his life writing and lecturing.
Jake becomes jealous of Rhosa’s relationship with a film director who invites her to make a film with him in Los Angeles. She and Jake separate. The pressures of success in Hollywood drive Rhosa to an alcohol-fueled breakdown. The novel ends when she relinquishes her career as an actress and returns to London to work with Jake on political reform.
