Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

‘We’re in the back of a car belonging to the men our mothers told us to never get in the back of a car of. I close my eyes and wonder how many girls will come to my funeral.’

Vincent Patrick Duffy has already checked out. Trapped between Skintown’s narrow horizons, he chops ribs and chickens in a takeaway, dreaming of escape, joint after freshly rolled joint.

A mindless act of kindness leads to the unlikeliest of business opportunities. Where the government has failed, might the second summer of love and a little pill with a dove on it be the broom to sweep away the hatred and replace it with love, so much love?

Skintown is Vinny’s drink- and drug-fuelled odyssey through fighting, fishing, rioting, romance, reconciliation and acid house. Bristling with a restless energy and drunk on black humour, this superb debut is a wild ride.

'Ciaran McMenamin writes brilliantly ... Horrifying and hilarious, Skintown is a compulsive read.' Liz Nugent

'Lures the reader into the madcap night and then delivers a hairpin twist.' Irish Times

'A supercharged riot of a debut novel, zinging with confidence and intelligence.' Joseph O'Connor

A smashing listen

A fantastic book bubbling with 90's angst right from the start. A Trainspotting ride from Northern Ireland well worth the listen

A well written and well read rollercoaster ride

Wow - this book is quite a ride. Set in Northern Ireland - mid to late nineties I guess - it portrays a short but resonant part of the life of one Vincent Duffy. The story is well told - it weaves together the threat of violence, violence, profanity, drugs, affairs of the heart and more - and all with a large dose of humour. Some of it is quite surreal - a lot of it very much in your face. Some great observations and I as mentioned much to laugh at along the way - even if a fair amount of that is dark.

Ciaran McMenamin is not only an excellent author - he is a brilliant narrator and does a fabulous job of bringing the story and the characters to life.

Highly recommended - and you've been warned about the language, violence and drugs.

Entertaining from the start!

The story is magnificent, as is the narration by the author, transporting you to 1990’s Northern Ireland in the narrators own unique style. I would honestly live to see a movie based on this story!
Well worth a listen!

Outstanding

This was utterly brilliant. I’m gutted I’ve finished it. The narration was superb. I think it’s one of the best audio books I’ve ever listened to.

Electric from start to finish and with more than just a hint of heartbreak. Worthy of a listen.

For anyone who grew up in Enniskillen in the 90s it'll resonate with you. Long live Chippy Street!

A book with the wow factor!

A coming of age story with a difference. The story is beautifully told with excellent, witty prose leaving the reader wanting more.
