About this listen
Will Darling came back from the Great War with a few scars, a lot of medals, and no idea what to do next. Inheriting his uncle's chaotic secondhand bookshop is a blessing...until strange visitors start making threats. First a criminal gang, then the War Office, both telling Will to give them the information they want, or else.
Will has no idea what that information is, and nobody to turn to, until Kim Secretan - charming, cultured, oddly attractive - steps in to offer help. As Kim and Will try to find answers and outrun trouble, mutual desire grows along with the danger.
And then Will discovers the truth about Kim. His identity, his past, his real intentions. Enraged and betrayed, Will never wants to see him again.
But Will possesses knowledge that could cost thousands of lives. Enemies are closing in on him from all sides - and Kim is the only man who can help.
Contains mature themes.

Excellent escapism
A classic KJ Charles. Great mix of romance, crime, suspense. Actually a very decent spy novel, with some fun romance to escape into. Got me though a very grey December.

A wonderful story
The characters have a great depth and the author uses the time, place and genre (post WWI London) to explore all the roots and depths of uncertain romance, being gay, and finding the imperfect perfect.
The narration is solid and manages male and female, mixed accents well.

not my favourite
This is the 1st KJ Charles's book that I wasn't too keen on...
As much as I tried, I just couldn't really buy Kim's feelings!
All the betrayals & he wasn't the one who declared his feelings... Phoebe did & after very little went on with them!
I think if he'd have gone on the Wednesday, it might've felt different for me, but even then Will had to make the 1st move...
Also why would the WO allow Will to be harmed when they knew very well that might mean that dangerous secrets could be unveiled, simply to punish him for not cooperating... that's cutting off your nose to spite your face... nonsensical!

I have no ear for accents so I loved it
I’m not saying the accents were right (no ear) but I thought it was well acted.

Good plot with ups and downs
I liked that this story had a linear plot where twists and turns revolved around a central premise. Exciting mystery, interesting characters and interactions. Also very steamy scenes between the two male character leads. Very spicy indeed. Detailed romance. Nice.

Good spy story..suprisingly made me laugh
As say good story...and found myself laughing out loud every time the character called Will had a realisation! Not sure if that was author's intention as not the genre of the book. Surprised me every time and so suppose it is a reflection of this reader...but was a very enjoyable aspect of the book. Excellent

Great Story, Perfect Narration
Cornell Collins makes this story come alive. His different voices complement Charles' characters. It is easy to love both Kim and Will as KJ Charles shows them with all their strengths and vulnerabilities. The story line is well paced. The setting is well researched and I can't wait to listen to the next 2 stories.

Amusing historical British gay romance
I am normally not that much of a fan of crass humor, but there was something real and amusing about the main protagonist's language that just fit greatly with the mood, situation and the times/his background. It's the dark British type of humour - somewhat dark black humor. It was interesting to listen how the author was able to base this story on moral choices vs easy choices vs what could be considered as patriotic choices but not necessarily moral ones.
