Summary

Slough House is Jackson Lamb’s kingdom; a dumping ground for members of the intelligence service who’ve screwed up: left a secret file on a train, blown surveillance, or become drunkenly unreliable. They’re the service’s poor relations – the slow horses – and bitterest among them is River Cartwright, whose days are spent transcribing mobile phone conversations. But when a young man is abducted, and it’s threatened that he’ll be beheaded live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem him.

Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone involved has their own agenda….

Awesome! Gripping from start to finish

One of the best books I've listened to all year. Mick Herron has a turn of phrase like a cross between Raymond Chandler and Lee Child and Shaun Barrett narrates superbly. Already downloaded Dead Lions. Highly recommended.

Strangely gripping in its own way

exhibits a droll but compelling tone with mostly unlikable characters that you get attached to.

A good spy yarn

This book exceeded my expectations and Sean Barratt provided his usual high standard narration. He managed to bring all the characters to life. If you like Le Carre, there is a high probability you will like this one. I found the book easy to follow but engrossing.

Superb

What made the experience of listening to Slow Horses the most enjoyable?

Pacy, clever, twisting and gripping, up there with Le Carré and Deighton. Can't wait for book 2.

Good storytelling

A good yarn in a current setting, but not quite LeCarre. A more realistic scenario for why River was exiled would have given it the edge.

Herron fishes in a murky pool

Great plot, characters with faults, and a triumphal finale - this story had all if these in huge spades. Congratulations to the writer and the narrator (whose characterisation of Jackson Lamb was superb). I loved this book

Not quite leCarre...yet

Switched on to this series fairly late on but having recently listened to the AMAZING BBC dramatisations for the fourth time I was curious to explore a more contemporary George Smiley.

Jackson Lamb is definitely that, but I was slightly underwhelmed by the plot (which has dated through no fault of its own).

Regardless, I’ve bought the next four already and am looking forward to seeing how these characters evolve.
