A spellbinding and subversive queer recasting of Arthurian myth by the legendary author of Hild

The girl knows she has a destiny before she even knows her name. She grows up in the wild, in a cave with her mother, but visions of a faraway lake come to her on the spring breeze, and when she hears a traveler speak of Artos, king of Caer Leon, she knows that her future lies at his court.

And so, brimming with magic and eager to test her strength, she breaks her covenant with her mother and, with a broken hunting spear and mended armour, rides on a bony gelding to Caer Leon. On her adventures, she will meet great knights and steal the hearts of beautiful women. She will fight warriors and sorcerers. And she will find her love, and the lake, and her fate.

Nebula and Lambda Award-winning author Nicola Griffith returns with Spear, a glorious queer retelling of Arthurian legend, full of dazzling magic and intoxicating adventure.

a great retelling of a traditionallly all male legend

I've never read an medieval fantasy book before, I've have said the genre would not have been my bag at all. This book might get me rethinking that blanket statement, the writing and story of this was really captivating. The author has a really lovely reading voice making it a great listen as well.

A new Authurian legend

This book fits seamlessly into the existing Authurian legends. Yetchallenging them and telling a new and engaging story that's a very satisfying read. Even if I wish I could now dig into the further adventures of Peretur. The has delightful representation of queerness and disability.

It is also the story about a big lesbian woman with a big spear, it's not a sword, it's better.

Queer Camelot (Caerlyon) yes please

Loved this bit of Arthurian magic that tinkers round the edges of the canonical stuff in a way that puts the queer and the magic back in. Great if you're into Arthurian stuff/fantasy but also so solid in the medieval research and not so misty that it's great if you're just into historical fiction. And perfect if you just want queers inserted into the stories that you've lived with all your life. And perfect while you're waiting for the follow-up to Hild.
