Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese.
For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.
Then one night Minalan is forced to pick up his mageblade again to defend his adopted home from the vanguard of an army of goblins - gurvani, they call themselves - bent on a genocidal crusade against all mankind. And that was the good news. The bad news was that their shamans were armed with more magical power than has been seen since the days of the ancient Imperial Magocracy - and their leader, a mysterious, vengeful force of hate and dark magic, is headed directly to Boval Vale, along with a massive invading army of gurvani. The good people of Boval and their spellmonger have only one choice: To hole up in the over-sized Boval Castle and hope they can endure a siege against hundreds of thousands of goblins.
When the people look to him for hope, Minalan does his best, but the odds are depressing: There are multitudes of goblins, and they want Boval Vale as a staging ground for a vengeful invasion of the whole Five Duchies. Add to his troubles a jealous rival mage, a motley band of mercenaries, a delusional liege lord who insists victory is at hand despite the hordes at his door, a dour castellan, a moody, pregnant girlfriend, and a catty ex-girlfriend who specializes in sex magic - all trapped in a stinking, besieged castle with no hope of rescue, and you'll understand why Minalan is willing to take his chances with the goblins.
All that stands between the gurvani horde and the people of the Five Duchies is one tired, overwhelmed baker's son who wanted nothing more than to be a simple village spellmonger.

Just couldn’t listen any more
The story didn’t seem bad, I got about 3 hours in, seemed decent high fantasy, bit cheesy but I’ll go with it. What I couldn’t stand anymore was the narrator, nothing wrong with his voice- if a little old sounding for the main protagonist, but it is the way he is saying stuff, it reminds me of Captain Kirk from the old Star Treks, the weird pauses and putting emphasis on odd words, it’s a shame but I just couldn’t take it anymore. Would like to know if the others are read like that or just this one. I’ve read and listen to so many I wanted to try and branch out but when compared to the narration of Joe Abercrombie’s work, or Patric Roofus’ it just doesn’t hold up. Will try just reading it myself

Absolutely great series...
I am nearing the end of book 3 and I felt compelled to edit my review of this book which is the first in the series.
I lack the ability to articulate just how much I appreciate the style of Terry Mancour. He has created a world with such detail and depth, with his dark sense of humour resonating with my own.
John Lee brings the books alive, he surpasses my high expectations.
I have listened to many great books on Audible, and when I listen to a new author/narrator pairing, I hope that I find a combination that competes with these great books. Terry Mancour and John Lee are perhaps my favourite pairing to date.

Loredump incarnate
Somewhere deep in this series of books, I feel like a good story is waiting. Sadly, the author seems almost afraid to tell it. Whenever the story is just about to progress, it goes into a thirty minute info dump of lore and worldbuilding, only about 10% of which is actually relevant to story. This book insists on telling us about the world and its history, rather than showing us. As a result, this is pretty much 8 hour book, spread across 18.

Fetch my silly hat
As with all new audiobooks that first of the series is always a risk..... totally worth taking.. once you acclimatise to your narrator

good for people new to fantasy fiction <br />
It's ok worth a listen for people new to fantasy fiction, however it does come across as the main character just bragging about. how great he is , but still enjoyable

Give it an hour of your time and you won't regret it
This took me a few minutes to realise that the performance was matching the character to perfection, brilliantly witty

An interesting and gripping story
Narrator sounds like Martin Jarvis, he uses different uk accents for the different characters.
Not sure why there’s American voices for non story parts, it doesn’t go.
The sex parts are not required nor the child sodomy references

I got the Second book
It’s good,funny at times.
The narrator voice was easy to listen to.
For me,that could rely make or Break a good story.
Pokes fun at the life of wizard,the outfits for eg,
But that doesn’t take away from the story or main character.
Wort a listen.
