About this listen
Everything about the ranch is a mystery. Rumours abound about the millionaire who owns it, the women who live with him, and the sudden disappearances. Joe Pickett is tasked by the governor to find the truth. There are two other men living up at the ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe. The first man doesn't frighten him. But the second is another story entirely.

Great modern western
Jeff Harding is a great narrator and I love listening to his voice. He has narrated several Jack Reacher novels. Box is new to me but I'm looking forward to listening to many more

Book interesting but did not love the narrator
This was the first I book I listened to by this author and I stayed to the end of the book because it was interesting and in-spite of the narrator. The narration was good but not something I enjoyed
I might read other books by author but not pick up other audios

Macho Macho Men
Please note this book is part of a series, and this is not the first one. Had I known that before reading I would have better understood why Joe Pickett leads such an incredibly busy life. Not only is he a full time Game warden with three querulous daughters, but he is also commissioned by the governor to carry out law enforcement work. (Call me old fashioned but I thought that was a job for the police?) This one is set in a very masculine gun-toting world where a blind eye is turned to students who keep guns in their dormitories and the sheriff and local judge run the town at the bidding of a man who appears to be acting as a righteous vigilante. The women in the story tend to ‘sashay’ instead of walk and are not adverse to an odd roll in the hay. It is filled with gnarly men who go for a drink in the local bar, still covered in bloody fur after a hard day hunting and dismembering the kill. This is not my idea of paradise, and I can’t say I will be reading any more of this series, but the story entertained and it passed a few hours in a reasonable way. The reader was OK with the gruff male voices but the women sounded like dreadful female parodies and were generally irritating.

CJ Box is still a worthwhile listen
Reasonably interesting storyline but perhaps there could have been more exciting moments.
Pickett is a cool customer & could handle more intense situation?
