Summary
"We were something like the movie Love Jones, a real-life Nina and Darius. Where we went wrong, I don’t know. But, I want to get to the bottom of it so I can move on with my life and be done with Judah once and for all. This guy has serious issues, and I’m sure I haven’t seen the worst he has to offer." - Naomi
In the heart of Los Angeles lives the Evans clan - a middle-class black family that is educated and somewhat snobby. Naomi, the youngest of three daughters, already knows what she wants out of life. After all, her parents have worked hard to ensure that she and her sisters aim high with their goals and are hypergamous in their relationships. Naomi is on track and following the cookie-cutter lifestyle her parents have laid out for her, but then she meets Judah - a talented but dysfunctional artist who wants to do right, but only knows how to do wrong.
Naomi soon finds herself caught up in a delicate web of lies and deceit that she is unable to break away from. College life proves far easier than the game of cat and mouse that she's playing with Judah, a game she knows full well she has no chance of winning. But play she must. Unless she wants to leave Judah's world, and for Naomi, that's a hard pill to swallow.
Judah's charms has no bounds. He has Naomi like Silly Putty in the palm of his hands. Not wanting to be viewed as a pick-me, Naomi tries her best to play hardball so that Judah knows she's not at all like the girls he's used to. When another woman enters the picture, it's not hard to see that things are headed for disaster. In the end, no one is prepared for just how bad things can get or the devastating impact Judah's mind games will have on all those involved.
C. Darayl Howard's passion for telling stories from a real-life perspective hits home in this new adult, coming-of-age tale of a love gone wrong. Once more, the author provides a pause-resister that listeners will not want to end.
