Editor reviews

This story, about life in the California gold mines in the mid-19th century, is narrated by Jack Benson's pleasant alto voice. The story has few characters and much drama - and portrays life in those times with humor and a convincing realism. Listeners get a real sense of place, and a feeling of the rough and lawless lifestyle the gold miners led back then. Bret Harte is a master of writing dialogue, and Jack Benson an excellent renderer of its vibrancy.

Summary

Here is a tale that concerns the incredible power of friendship. The movie Tennessee's Partner (1955), starring John Payne and Ronald Reagan, was based on this story.
