there's simply nothing wrong with it nothing comes to mind at all so I think the word perfect though nothing is is the closest we can get to sum up this great story and universe

Perfect anime adaptation materiel
The whole volume gave me anime vibes especially in the third book near the end where the black knight is born, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this gets adapted into a anime or at least a TV series.

I don't know if I can finish this
It's okay. Nothing really upsetting or annoying about the story, but nothing stands out either.
This just reads like military drama. About as enjoyable as watching two strangers play chess. You can only pretend to have fun for so long before it dawns on you that there are better things to do.
The plot is only slightly complicated, but nothing too surprising. It's all following a well trodden path, which I won't spoil on the off chance that you aren't expecting the tropes you should be expecting, and might actually enjoy this.
The narration is pretty good. Some of the voices are a tiny bit similar, but it's more than made up for with great intonation and emotional character. The narrator knows what he's doing.
The characters are pretty consistent and feel kinda real.
But the story... I just can't bring myself to care. I'm more than halfway through and I've got a pretty good list of things in my head that will happen by the end of the book. I've been right so far. So it just feels like going through the motions.
The story isn't bad. The world building is pretty decent. However, it's very detail-heavy and light on quality exposition. That means that a lot of the time I find myself nodding along at the alien name of an alien species that I may or may not have heard before but still can't remember. The information dump is poorly done and it just keeps coming back with more history trivia. I don't even know how many alien species there are anymore because they're all just random words with little context. Five? Ten? Fifty? How many allies? Who's still alive? The characters learn stuff off screen and then explain it to us poorly. I'd hoped for over 10 hours that the info dump would come together into a clean picture but the loose threads keep multiplying and I just don't care anymore. I don't even know if I'm supposed to care, because if not, there's not a lot of interesting stuff going on. Rudimentary ship battles, 'unexpected' stealth ambushes, rudimentary ground battles, firing rail guns at enemies, and a little banter least we forget that we're listening to real people with grand hopes and dreams of.. uh.. being good soldiers? That's all there is to look forward to. I could be wrong, but as an author you've got to at least *promise* something good in the first 10 hours. Nothing meaningful has happened. It's tragic that the first couple of hours were by far the most interesting, when our kid was trying to decide if he really should join the best military branch in existence. But he did (duh) and all they do is intense grunt work. I'm more likely to resume listening to Expeditionary Force because that story's rat race at least promised stuff, even if it didn't deliver either.
The most interesting things to happen here is their weird religion (very Abrahamic, so not THAT interesting) and the hints that a culture could flourish when most people's memories are fake. But I won't hold my breath that the latter idea will get much attention. It's more of an "oh, by the way".
Maybe this is your thing. I was happy this wasn't yet another Warhammer 40k thing, but it's not even as interesting as those very few I listened to. And maybe I'll finish it and update my review. But I really don't wanna.

I like the story and the characters. Enjoyed the other books in the series. But. What I found annoying is everyone 'said' something. Dave said. Tim said. The pilot said. If something else was used would make it more enjoyable
