Summary

A Sunday Times and Richard and Judy best seller and the first instalment in Peter May's sensational, million-selling Lewis trilogy.

A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith.

A Murder
Detective Inspector Fin Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate. For Lewis-born Macleod, the case represents a journey both home and into his past.

A Secret
Something lurks within the close-knit island community. Something sinister.

A Trap
As Fin investigates, old skeletons begin to surface, and soon he, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

Outstanding and unexpected. Best book listened to this year. Recommended

I was expecting the usual murder and mayhem but it turned out to be a lovely gentle story about coming of age, really. Frequent jumping to and fro with the past and present was easy to follow and as the story developed it grew more sinister with a few unexpected twists.
Extremely well written and beautifully read, this book is probably one of the best I’ve listened to this year. Quite a bit of swearing but not for the sake of it.
I’m really looking forward to the next two stories.

Brilliantly descriptive and narrated with perfection a beautiful Scottish accent

Beautiful and a great listen, this is how to write, brilliant narration and wonderful writing and yes it’s a murder investigation but it is so so much more than that. Loved it. Took a while to get totally swept away but i did and it was worth listening.

Riveting Read

Enjoyed this book immensely. Well written; great story; beautifully narrated.
The next book in the trilogy, ‘The Lewis Man’, is at the top of my wishlist.

little slow in places

The narration was terrific, the narrators ability to do different accents is exceptional. The story is built layer upon layer and can be slow at times and the experiences of the main character are rather far fetched. The end is very exciting and the writing is very good however

Brilliant

This is an excellent story, twisting and turning, not a particularly easy listen but totally addictive. Peter Forbes is a reader who has characters down to a fine art and I will definitely be looking for more of his work in the future.

Evocative and Suspenseful

My first time reading any of Peter May. The writing is brilliantly descriptive giving a real picture of the island and life upon it. The plot weaves between present day murder and the childhood of the detective. Whilst I had guessed the killer before the end the motive came as a bolt out of the blue - an insight into the workings of the inner mind.
Read brilliantly in a lovely accent.

Fantastic thriller

Great story with a twist. Well narrated and a feeling of being on the outermost islands of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 along with the characters. A must buy.

I've found a new author ...

...and the narrator brings every single character to reality, male or female alike ... I am totally enthralled with the story line, the history, the traditions the similarities to my upbringing and present environment ... I even downloaded a map of Lewis and Harris to help Fin on his quest! I can't wait to download my next Peter May ... love him !!
