Shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger Award

Two murders. An abandoned asylum. Will a mysterious former patient help untangle the dark truth?

The body of an elderly woman has been found in the bowels of a derelict asylum on the banks of the Thames. As Detective Lew Kirby and his partner begin their investigation, another body is discovered in the river nearby. How are the two murders connected?

Before long, the secrets of Blackwater Asylum begin to reveal themselves. There are rumours about underground bunkers and secret rooms, unspeakable psychological experimentation, and a dark force that haunts the ruins, trying to pull back in all those who attempt to escape. Urban explorer Connie Darke, whose sister died in a freak accident at the asylum, is determined to help Lew expose its grisly past. Meanwhile Lew discovers a devastating family secret that threatens to turn his life upside down.

As his world crumbles around him, Lew must put the pieces of the puzzle together to keep the killer from striking again. Only an eccentric former patient really knows the truth - but will he reveal it to Lew before it’s too late?

I would highly recommend this book. The performance is really good with very distinguishable characters. Absolutely worth a listen.

Brilliant

I am delighted to have discovered this author. The story was original, ,and the narrator Matthew Lloyd Davies one of the best .
There were a lot of characters in it, and a couple of times I had to go back and listen again. Otherwise a totally enjoyable book.
I look forward to the next one.

Very Good

I didn't know what to expect from this and putting on my Miss Marple cap, could see some flaws in the overall handling of the case that I wanted to shout out, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

The narration was superb and I warmed to the characters. I look forward to the next in series, a credit well spent.

Enjoyed it, but a few accents were dodgy.

A really engaging book with an interesting and atmospheric topic. No major surprise or twist, you just needed to plod it out. Well read, apart from a couple of character’s accents which were awful.

Poor narration

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was ok whilst wearing ear buds but if I played it in the car, I had to keep rewinding to hear what was said. If I turned the volume up to hear some bits, the next part became too loud too be comfortable

Enjoyable fast moving thriller.

This is a beautifully understated performance my Matthew Lloyd Davies. Subtle and fast moving, with clear characterisation and a sensitive touch. There are some less than perfect accents in the read, but even though not accurate, they are consistent and you soon forget the initial cringe moment. That is the only downside to a considered and subtle voice performance. A well crafted book, full of twists and turns. Most enjoyable.

Creepy atmospheric debut

This is the debut crime thriller from this author and although the synopsis sounded interesting I wasn’t expecting much. How wrong I was. This is a superb police procedural. The setting of an old abandoned asylum with old abandoned tunnels gives the book a creepy, chilling feel straight away. There’s quite a big cast of characters, but unlike some reviewers, I didn’t find it at all confusing. I was gripped from the start and the story moved at a good pace with plenty of twists and turns. Loved the character of Lew Kirby and look forward to the next in the series.

I enjoyed the narration by Matthew Loyd Davies.

Just never really grabbed me

I was really looking forward to this because I love new detective series. But my attention just kept wandering, to the extent that I was rewinding all the time - I almost gave up, but the characters were promising enough to keep me going. I shall probably revisit it when my library runs down. Odd narration, too. At times it was perfectly fine, but some of the characters’ voices were quite bizarre. Almost like an elderly uncle “putting on his funny voices” to amuse children with their bedtime story…
