Summary

Throughout the 1940s, forgers helped thousands of children escape Nazi France. In this instant New York Times bestseller, Kristin Harmel reimagines their story...

Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Librarian of Auschwitz and The Book Thief.

In 1942, Eva is forced to flee Paris after the arrest of her father, a Polish Jew. Finding refuge in a small mountain town, she begins forging identity documents for Jewish children escaping to neutral Switzerland. But erasing people comes with a price, and along with a mysterious, handsome forger named Rémy, Eva realises she must find a way to preserve the real names of the children who are too young to remember their own identities.

When Rémy disappears and the resistance cell they work for is betrayed, the records they keep in The Book of Lost Names become even more crucial to remembering the truth...

A present day discovery of the book leaves researchers fascinated by its origins and desperate to decipher its codes. Only Eva holds the answer but will she have the strength to face old memories and help reunite those lost during the war?

Great story !!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book whilst I listened with a heavy heart , knowing there'll be heartbreak and devastation to live through.
It's one of those stories that you carry with you for a long time , while you entertain "what ifs" on characters' behalf for a long while after.
I just wished there was a little more update at the end, but I do realise there was probably no way to know, so we leave it at that.

Touching WW2 story

Really nicely written story set in WW2, nothing more to add here as it’s all there in the summary.

The characters were well drawn and believable, I personally engaged more as I knew the areas in haute Savoie, but equally had I not it’s still very good.

Narration was excellent both male and female voices, without any stupid accents for the French or Germans characters.

Highly recommend if you like a good WW2 storyline.

What a wonderful book

This was a good read, I hope it becomes a film, I will read it again, I cried. This was easy to listen to and one I will remember and recommend to others. Whilst I do sometimes get a bit weary of war related books, this was a very different angle which was fascinating

Beautiful story beautifully performed.

A different angle to the usual wartime novel and one that will stay with me…

Brilliant

Such a fantastic story. Loved it .. so emotional . The narrator is great. I’m already looking to see if we can get to the town in the story in France when we are on holiday this summer
