About this listen

Sherman Holmes has officially settled into his new city, and the World's Greatest Detective Agency has opened its doors. While his put-upon partner, Watson, would be happy to keep the jobs as simple as missing pets, when a worried worker with an outlandish tale of ghosts walks in, there's no stopping Sherman from taking the case.

Now, the new duo must investigate a local "haunted" tourist site where the scares are going off-script and otherworldly interference is suspected. With Sherman lost in the history of the mystery, Watson finds himself needing to adapt quickly to his new job's unique challenges.

Facing booby-trapped halls to navigate, pesky former coworkers popping in without warning, and growing attention from a local criminal element, even an operative of Watson's talents is going to need some help getting through this case alive.

Instead, he has Sherman Holmes.

Amusing

Ridiculous characters and a crazy story - but somehow it kept me smiling and interested.

A great sequel

This was a really fun adventure. Not a gritty crime thriller or an overlong mystery, it was punchy and light-hearted. My only criticism is there were a fair few throwaway lines to jog your memory of what happened in book 1. As I only recently listened to that they felt a bit clunky and heavy handed.

The characters were fun, Watson has character growth, it's all there. The narration was great too.

Peanut Butter Crackers 😄

Settling into their new lives, Holmes & Watson happen upon fun characters - especially Gwen, Agent 808 and Old Gill – and isn’t Peanut Butter Crackers an adorable name for a cat? Sherman and Joel’s evolving partnership and friendship was as emotionally resonant in CotHHH as it was in CotDD - the character work around Holmes protecting his Watson was especially perfect!! And when Sherman and Joel had a conversation about isolation and mortality the writing and dialogue was sublime. The author’s funny bone was on full display but not everything landed with the haunted house mystery and Sherman’s use of his cognitive window lacked flair.

🎧 The narrator’s enthusiastic vocals for Sherman remain precious! He did a fantastic job narrating a much bigger cast of characters, even managing to make a father and son sound different yet alike. As I had waxed lyrical about the narrator’s work in my review of the CotDD, I will not gush again! What I will say is that after Sherman and Joel, Mr. Aiello is the MVP here. I fervently hope that Scott Aiello remains on narration duty.

A great sequel to book 1

First off I recommend listening to book 1 as it’s just as great. That said you can listen to this as a stand alone as there is a brief catch up but you will miss a lot of the backstory

The story follows Sherman Holmes a man who has been experimented on and once a day can get enhanced mental abilities for 5 minutes. He’s joined by Watson a secret agent who works as his handler and assistant. As the self proclaimed world’s greatest detective this is his first official case.

The main story is engaging and there are a few sub story lines that seem to set up for future books. The main story line does finish and is an enjoyable mystery. It’s a cozy mystery than something dark and graphic. It did remind me of a Scooby-Doo adventure in some of the humour and plot. As well as feeling nostalgic it makes it a fun mystery.

Narrator is the same as book 1, which I enjoy for continuity especially in pronouncing words. The voices for each character can be easily distinguished. They put a lot of emotion into the voices.
