Summary

1851. Wealthy businessman Jacob Welland is dying of consumption and implores private detective Laetitia Rodd to find his beloved brother, whom he has not seen for 10 years.

An impoverished Oxford scholar who left college to live as a wandering hermit, Joshua Welland has been spotted in a gypsy camp, where it was rumoured he was learning great secrets. Her search reconnects Laetitia with a couple from her past, but then a murder is committed. Laetitia's friend, Inspector Blackbeard of Scotland Yard, dismisses her talk of gypsies and secrets, but Laetitia is convinced something sinister lurks in this peaceful landscape.

I really enjoyed this full and complicated mystery

Excellent story, marvellous narrator. Thank you. I would love to find more audio books by this author read by the same narrator.

Surprisingly good

Really enjoyed this ‘costume drama’ crime listen. Good plot with some humour - and well narrated.

Mostly enjoyable

Generally enjoyable - my only issue is with the accent of the lawyer Patrick Flint who is is supposed to be from Co Antrim but sounds as if he is from the very south of Ireland - think a supposed Geordie sounding like a Somerset farmer 🤣

Got bit lost

Enjoyable light romp with twists , I don't often get to guess the murders, sometimes too many names , have to think who is who

Seriously love these books

Very enjoyable crime series, well written with very engaging characters and twisty plots. Sometimes slightly too melodramatic for my taste - some plot elements remind me of Wilkie Collins. But overall thumping good stories and an absolutely perfect narrator.

Already very impatient for the next one!

Wonderful listen never disappoints

Austen meets Dickens meets Christie. A lovely book with just the right number of twists. I can’t get enough of Lottie Rodd. It’s desperately sad that the author had such an untimely passing, she has left something joyful in the world. I wish the last book could be made into an audio version, but I will buy a hard copy nevertheless.
