Summary

Today we find ourselves in possession of stupendous know-how, which we willingly place in the hands of the most highly skilled people. But avoidable failures are common, and the reason is simple: the volume and complexity of our knowledge has exceeded our ability to consistently deliver it - correctly, safely or efficiently.

In this groundbreaking audiobook, Atul Gawande makes a compelling argument for the checklist, which he believes to be the most promising method available in surmounting failure. Whether you're following a recipe, investing millions of dollars in a company or building a skyscraper, the checklist is an essential tool in virtually every area of our lives, and Gawande explains how breaking down complex, high pressure tasks into small steps can radically improve everything from airline safety to heart surgery survival rates.

Fascinating and enlightening, The Checklist Manifesto shows how the simplest of ideas could transform how we operate in almost any field.

Wow

Heard this recommended through 'Tools of Titans' by Tim Ferriss.
It was not what I thought it would be. Some of the stories are intense, the narrator does a great job of emoting them. I have always been an 'anti-rules' guy, this book showed me how foolish (and childish) that philosophy was.
Straight after reading, I've used the guidelines mentioned in the book to set up my own basic checklists for my own life.
Accept you're fallible, put safety nets into your life!

Praise for Boeing’s checklists

A follow up book retracting his misplaced trust and high praise for Boeing after the murderous 737 Max crashes would be a most appropriate sequel - getting to the core of the economic and corporate forces opposing the integrity of checklists.

Amazing book for anyone really cares about getting things done right

Intelligent author with groundbreaking but simple ideas about how to run things more smoothly and avoid disasters in many fields. The whole book kept me engaged and I’m the type of person that can get bored fast. Highly recommend!

I have started using checklists more and more

Started using checklists at work.
Good examples of how checklists were introduced to the field of medicine - giving examples from civil engineering and aeronautical industry. I have put into use straight away - so happy to recommend.

It's as simple as Atul Gawande tells

We have been testing checklist for many years in engineering based business and it works great in there. The problem is just how to get everyone on board and this book gave me many ideas for to solve that problem. Thank you Atul.

Incredible book and great listen

Well thought through and structured analysis in favour of checklists. Really both enjoyed the content and the way the story was structured. This book lends itself well to being listened to which I find quite rare in more technical books- I really enjoyed it and have already recommended it to some friends.

Good Solid book to get you thinking

It was easy to finish! Good food for thought! It highlights the importance of designing out complacency in medicine but does show how human performance is vital to successful complex procedures. Gives plenty of industry examples and examples from other industries that rely heavily on checklists, namely the commercial flying.
