About this listen

Under the hot sun, the Jeddah streets make a scene from an old black-and-white movie: the women dressed like long, dark shadows and the men in their light cotton tunics. Naser’s friends have all left town for cooler climes but he can’t get away: he’s an outsider in Saudi and he needs to hold down his job at the local carwash. During his time off, he sits beneath his favourite palm tree, writing to the mother he has left behind in Africa and yearning for the glamorous Egyptian actress he hopes to meet one day. It’s hard to adjust to a world that puts up so many barriers between men and women: walls in the mosque, divider panels in the buses and veils on the street.

Naser feels increasingly trapped, not least by the religious police who keep watch through the shaded windows of their government jeeps. A splash of colour arrives in Naser’s world when, unexpectedly, a small piece of paper is dropped at his feet. It is a love note, from a woman whose face he has never seen and whose voice he has never heard. She tells him that she will wear a pair of pink shoes the next time she passes so that he can pick her out from the other women in their identical black abayas. Erotic tension runs high; Naser and his ‘habibati’ begin to exchange letters. But in moments of doubt the pink shoes seem to lead him into a cul-de-sac of thwarted desire, fraught with danger.

Relationships between unmarried men and women are illegal under the strict Wahhibism of Saudi state rule – and it’s not long before their real, but illicit, love must face the hardest test of all…

A gripping and fascinating read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am not usually an avid reader of fiction but have no hesitation in recommending this book which I bought it because I am interested in the Middle East and the story sounded intriguing. I was not disappointed. Once I had started listening I couldn't stop - I was gripped by the narrative but also learned a lot about life in Saudi Arabia. It was an unusual plot and held my attention until the last page. I had the impression that it was also rather autobiographical as the author, like the main character, was born in Sudan and went to Saudi Arabia as a child. It was a pleasure to listen to as the narrator was excellent. Definitely a five star rating on all counts

What did you like best about this story?

It is told from an unusual angle and is very well paced. Although it is a love story it is never sugary or melodramatic and one can identify with the protagonist. In addition I learned a lot about Saudi society

What does Christopher Simpson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

It was easier to identify with the narrator as the book was read by a young man. I also thought that Simpson was able to transmit the narrator' s emotions very successfully.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The girl with the pink shoes.

Any additional comments?

A great book. I will be looking out for others by the same author

Lovestory in Mecca

Certainly! Here's a revised version with improved flow and clarity:

**A captivating love story of an Eritrean young man who arrives in Saudi Arabia as a child refugee, fleeing his war-torn homeland and leaving his mother behind. Raised by his devout uncle, an orthodox Muslim, his life takes an unexpected turn when he begins receiving secret love notes from a mysterious girl. Known only by her pink shoes, she remains hidden beneath the traditional Islamic attire. What unfolds is a deeply moving and beautifully written tale of forbidden love, set against the backdrop of a society with rigid cultural norms. This gripping narrative, rich in literary value, explores the profound consequences of an unauthorized romance in Saudi Arabia, making it both a compelling read and a thought-provoking reflection on love and societal constraints.**
