About this listen

On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

I couldn't take my headphones off!

Would you listen to The Count of Monte Cristo again? Why?

Having read this several times, I decided to give listening a try. This book is a timeless yarn that completely engages the listener and pulls you into it's web of narrative. It is beautifully written and captures me every time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The development of the principle character, Edmund Dantes, is intriguing and compelling.

Have you listened to any of Bill Homewood’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This is my first experience of listening to a performance by Bill Homewood, and he clearly defined each character and gave emphasis and appropriate emotion to the narrative.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Without giving anything away, the pulling together of the threads of story at the end of the novel is gripping.

Any additional comments?

This book is my favourite 'go to' when I want a classic, well written, proper yarn that engages. It is also a good length for travelling long distances!

Great book and great reader, but not a perfect one

Great classic and generally brilliant reading. However I found some unnecessary mispronunciations of French and Italian recurrent names really annoying (for instance the name Peppino, where the accent falls on the i and not the e, is mispronounced hundreds of times). This diminished my enjoyment of the book, especially the part that takes place in Italy where I found myself constantly cringing at mispronunciations of names of people and locations. I fail to understand why the producers and reader who did an otherwise excellent job cannot do a bit of homework in that department. That aside a (very) long but satisfying journey into misconduct, revenge and redemption.

Amazing!

What made the experience of listening to The Count of Monte Cristo the most enjoyable?

I have the Penguin Clothbound edition of this on my bookshelf, I picked it up and was struggling. Listening to it, however, gave it a new lease of life which I wasn't expecting. The listening experience was fantastic and has really sold me on audiobooks

Who was your favorite character and why?

I know he was meant to be the bad guy, but I did love Noirtier. I also rather liked Eugénie and Valentine. Noirtier said very little yet conveyed a lot and as for Eugénie and Valentine, they were rather strong women for their time period. Eugénie and her elopement should have a side novel of its own!

What does Bill Homewood bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The depth of character. Dumas is by no means slacking in characterisation but Bill Homewood is a fantastic narrator who I only discovered through this book, but one I am intent to explore more in the future.

Any additional comments?

I said on my blog review that if you want to read, or listen to, one classic (pre-1900) in your life, make it this one! It is just amazing!

cracking performance

absolutely cracking performance and a great story. if the beginning seems tough, stick with it - getting to know the characters sets you up for incredible highs and lows later on in the story.

One of a kind adventure

I have read the regular book several years ago... decided to revisit my favourite characters with this audible. Excellent story, captivating plot, detailed descriptions of characters, superb narration.

A Pleasure

What a book. The story of Edmond Dantes is one I won’t forget in a hurry, and that I will definitely revisit. An incredible read that doesn’t suffer from its age as other classics do. I cannot recommend this more.

Flawless

One of my very favourite books ever and I loved every minute of Bill Homewood's narration. Such a labyrinthine tale needs such careful handling and that's exactly what it gets here. Brilliant.
