About this listen

Jeremy Booth leads a simple life, scraping by in the gay neighborhood of Seattle, never letting his lack of material things get him down. But the one thing he really wants—someone to love—seems elusive. Until the couple next door moves in and Jeremy sees the man of his dreams, Shane McCallister, pushed down the stairs by a brute named Cole.

Jeremy would never go after another man’s boyfriend, so he reaches out to Shane in friendship while suppressing his feelings of attraction. But the feeling of something being off only begins with Cole being a hard-fisted bully—it ends with him seeming to be different people at different times. Some days, Cole is the mild-mannered John and then, one night in a bar, he’s the sassy and vivacious drag queen Vera. So how can Jeremy rescue the man of his dreams from a situation that seems to get crazier and more dangerous by the day?

By getting close to the couple next door, Jeremy not only puts a potential love in jeopardy, but eventually his very life.

All the stars

This was absolutely incredible, there were so many twists and turns and I seriously didn’t expect the end of the book to go the way it did but I’m so glad it did. There is a really enjoyable amount of suspense in this book and the narrator did a fantastic job of building it all up. Give it a go you wont regret it.

A twisted tale, very well told story

Rick R Reed does it again! A suspenseful tale of twists & turns, leaving the reader reeling and trying to keep up sometimes, but WHAT A RIDE! There's a bit of romance, a lot of suspense, a lot of wondering what the heck's going on, and several moments of 'what the heck did I just read?"
The characters are relatable, you're left trying to figure them out & hoping for the best - or the worst - to happen to them. Trust me, this author knows how to put his characters - and his readers - through the emotional & mental wringer, and he does it beautifully. You'll be left breathless, shell-shocked, and satisfied upon finishing this story.
New to me narrator - He did an excellent job, great pacing, voicing, emotions, Great job!

Suspenseful thriller

I like Rick R. Reed's writing style, because he manages to get me right into the story very quickly and prepare you for an emotional rollercoaster ride with some surprising twists and turns.
Jeremy's life changes abruptly when a couple moves in next door. He meets Shane, who has been abused. This touches Jeremy, because he has a big heart. And the more time he spends with Shane, the more he feels attracted to him. But in doing so, he unwittingly enters dangerous territory.
The story was exciting and entertaining and I was rooting for Jeremy. I didn't see the ending coming and that's what makes a good thriller.
Wesley Landry read the audiobook and it was the first audiobook I've listened to by him. But I was delighted with his performance because he read with variety and I was able to distinguish the protagonists well. He also portrayed the emotions well. I'm already looking forward to more audiobooks with him as narrator.

Full of surprises

This story held my attention right till the end. It starts with Jeremy finding out there is trouble with his new neighbors. Not able to ignore it is the beginning of a twisted series of events.
Shane and John are the new neighbors and things are not as they seem. There have been issues surrounding these two since they were kids. Their childhood leads to events that made me cringe. This whole story is full of partial truths that come out, strange behaviors and even a romance. In the end the author pulled everything together and made me happy to have enjoyed another story from him. The narrator Wesley Landry did a great job bringing all the different characters to life. It added believably to many of the events.

Layer upon layer

This is a terrifying book. Really scary. Jeremy Booth is an ordinary guy who falls in love with his neighbor. But this neighbor has secrets. False identities, plot twists, near misses. Layer after layer, I couldn't put it down once I started. If you like suspense/thriller and romance, this is the book for you. But be aware of trigger warnings, the book refers to difficult subjects, just so you know.

One twist at the time

It’s not a secret that I love this author, and this book, as well as the previous ones, didn’t disappoint me at all.
The story is set in Seattle, where Jeremy, a man in his thirties, works as a cleaner. One day, coming back home, he rescues his new neighbour, Shane from the aggression of his flatmate, Cole.
From that moment on, their relashionship slowly grows into something special. But there are a lot of dark secrets Shane is hiding, and Cole’s presence doesn’t help at all. The man suffers from a mental illness, one thing that causes a lot of problems.
Jeremy loves Shane, but he doesn’t know how to deal with all the stange things happening around them
No spoilers about the story here, all I can say is that in every page we discover something different, and when we think we understood where the plot leads, there’s a different twist that changes everything.
I loved every single word and every character, starting from Jeremy and his big heart, his sister, always by his side even though she lives far away, and also Shane, despite I didn’t agree with some of his decisione, even though I could understand them.
Moreover, Wesley Landry, the narrator, (it was an audiobook), is a plus. He managed to give the right voice and interpretation to the characters, the different moments and the story in general.
5 stars for me!

Absolutely riveting!

I don't know what I expected from this story but I think I got that and so much more. Wesley Landry is a new-to-me narrator. It took me just a bit to adjust to his voice but the further I got into this audiobook the more I became riveted. Not only by the story but also by the sometimes-chilling way that the audio was delivered.

To say a lot about the story, other than what the blurb tells you, would probably be too much of a spoiler. This tale has a lot of twists and turns and suspense. In the end it is a romance but, for me, the very compelling storyline made this much more than your standard romantic suspense book.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

Wow, Suspenseful, not what I expected

Jeremy has new neighbours, John and Shane. Jeremy meets Shane when he comes home and watches Shane fall down the stairs, then the story begins with violence, mentally ill psychotic brother who has multiple personalities. it is twisted but brilliantly written. Really enjoyed this new to me narrator

WOW, this was not quite what I was expecting

Trigger warnings: Violence, personality disorder/mental illness, psychotic behavior, domestic abuse

This story was not quite what I was expecting. I expected more romance and less thriller. It was definitely a rollercoaster ride of mystery and suspense, sometimes bordering on horror. It's full of twists and turns. There were plenty of times where I was holding my breath, and I wondered if any of the characters would get an HEA. Would I recommend it? For the right listener. If you like romantic suspense/thrillers, I think you will enjoy this. I did enjoy it overall, and there is a love story underneath, but I wish I had realized what I was getting into. I have to be in the right frame of mind for this kind of story. Take note of the trigger warnings...it does get dark near the end.

The narration was good, and I thought he did a good job distinguishing the characters, especially John.

I received a free copy of the audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Hold on for a wild ride!

Hold on for a wild ride!

This is going to be a short review because I don’t want to give anything away. I didn’t even read the synopsis. Going in totally blind enhanced every twist and turn. Man, there were so many of them. Rick R. Reed writes good solid psychological thrillers. Domestic dramas. Whatever you want to call them. The writing was taut. The story worked. And I didn’t see the ending coming – the mark of a great story teller.

To go along with Rick’s great book was a fantastic narration by Wesley Landry. I’m not certain I’ve heard Wesley before. Usually Rick’s books are narrated by another narrator, but I barely noticed because Wesley’s performance hit every perfect note. He enhanced the audio tremendously.

So if you’re looking for a great story with tons of twists and turns, then this book is for you.
