Summary

Stegs Jenner has always lived on the edge. No ordinary cop, he's never happier than when he's working undercover, consorting with criminals and fighting to bring them to justice. But suspicion falls on him when he strikes out on his own and the operation he's involved in goes horribly wrong.

DI John Gallan and DS Tina Boyd are called in to investigate. What they cannot know is that their enquiries will take them both into the heart of one of London's most notorious criminal gangs - and one of them into the rifle sights of the enemy.

Geezer crime romp.

Enjoyed Dave Johns' geezer narration. Stegs Jenner is an interesting character and would like to see what happens next to him. Story does rely on your London geography.

I love these books very easy to read and get lost in a great plot.

The double crossing

The story was well written. Well paste enough twists and turns to make you want to continue to listen, or turn the page, the great introduction to a new detective.

Excellent tale

A convoluted tale with many twists and turns between undercover cops and criminals. The excellent Tina Boyd plays a key role. The only negative point I would make is that the story is to,d via two main characters, Steg Jenner’s and Gallon. The former uses the third person, the latter the first person but the way the story u rolls it can be confusing as to who is speaking. Part from that I really enjoyed the book and the narrator did a good job with the various accents.

Excellent Narrator

A good story set in London with guns, drugs, thugs and police. The story got a bit confusing at times as to who was who and which side they were on - need to listen a couple of times more to get it all sorted out. The narrator had the London accents down to a ‘tee’ (or the lack of them).

Story just fell apart half way through.

Started off believable but began to lose its way by chapter 20 where it all started unravelling into farcical nonsense. As a Londoner I found the narrators attempts to make this story any better quite laughable, in fact I wondered if this was meant to be a comedy, with Dr Who's Darlex invading in places. By chapter 30 I was really struggling to continue but stuck with it begrudgingly to see it out. This is the 2nd book I've had by this author and I am not planning to listen anymore. It reminded me of reading Mickey Spillaine paperbacks when I was a kid.

Utterly Fantastic

I have listened to lots of Simon Kernick stories and have come across Tina Boyd after John was killed. I was always keen to hear their story from the beginning.

Dave John is a great narrator, it was my first time listening to his voice and I was really happy with how he expressed the characters opinions and voices. I would be happy to listen to his voice again.

I was also very happy to hear him, completely explain every angle and how every person deceived or set up the other person. I was not left wondering about any character.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great listening experience.

Ripping good yarn.

This is my second Simon Kernick audio book in the Tina Boyd series.
I really enjoyed the story, which keeps a good pace. It's familiar and comfortable and was a great backdrop to my weekly 4 hours commute.
I like the narration even though his attempt at accents and different characters is very hit and miss.

Nothing challenging here, just a 'ripping good yarn!' I really hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Crime doesn't pay - or does it?

Good old Cockney gangster tale and more bent coppers than Brighton Arcade. Good listen, clever story and well read, with loads of real gangster rude words but with style. Don't let your maiden aunt listen with you! Steggs wants seeing too Simon Kernick?
