About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Has she been sent to save the realm or destroy it?

As Spymaster to the Queen, Aya's blood oath ensures she protects those she fights alongside - including Will, the Queen's Enforcer and Aya's bitter rival.

When rumors of dark magic rise in a nearby kingdom, both are sent to investigate.

But when Aya's power acts beyond her gods-given affinity, she risks being turned into a weapon in a war she doesn't know how to win.

And when her relationship with Will unexpectedly shifts, neither know the danger that will follow...

I loved the plot and the way the twists had me in a chokehold. Brilliantly written and beautifully performed, can’t wait for the next book!

30% of a story. A struggle to finish.

Nothing in this story feels earned. From the start it feels like you’ve been dumped in the middle of this world and the author just expects you to read the backstory they have in their head.

I kept waiting for something to be fleshed out or for character development, but it never came.

I have no idea why the main villains do what they do, or the main characters like each other.

And the narrator just seems morose and depressed the entire way through.

I’d give this one a pass.

Amateur and surface level writing

I was really looking forward to reading this book after reading ACOTAR and regaining my love for reading Fantasy. Maybe my expectations were too high?

I feel bad for writing a bad review as I'm sure a lot of hard work was put into this book. But I really wish I read the book reviews before I purpchased it. If you are looking for a book to rival ACOTAR, TOG, CC, Blood and Ash, Iron Flame, The Book of Azriel, The Serpent and The Wings of Night, ect, this book isn't for you. Maybe I have become accustomed to a level of writing that this book just lacks. It was just so hard to read, to the point I read it to help me fall asleep. The writing and story telling, in my opinion, felt amateur and very surface level, which is the best way I can describe it. I feel it lacked character and world building. There were many opportunities to expand further into interesting elements in the book but it never happened. The wolves served absolutely no purpose to the story. Aya and Will are more like rivals than enemies to lovers and there is barely any spice, which is the opposite to what the author promoted. Now my intention wasn't to read the book just for the spice but the story lacked so much adventure and excitement that I was hoping some romantic tension and spice might well, liven and spice it up.

As I struggled with the book, I thought I'd buy the audible version instead. I will admit that the narrator is really good and did a good job at bringing the book to life. This audible helped me finally finish the book at last but even then, it was still a stop-start struggle. Even the narrator couldn't save the story and there were many bored eye rolls throughout.

I won't be purchasing the second book but I do hope the author takes their time to really flesh out the story, the world and characters in the second one.
