About this listen

'Expertly plotted and mesmerising' - Mick Herron

A local myth. A deadly threat. Vera Stanhope, star of ITV's Vera, returns for her most shocking case so far . . .

I can't see anything. It's as if this house is on its own in the world, as if I'm on my own in the world and nobody would care if I died . . .

When a body is found on the common outside Rosebank, an isolated care home for troubled teens, DI Vera Stanhope is called out to investigate. The victim is Josh, a staff member, who never showed up to work, and her only clue is the disappearance of fourteen-year-old resident Chloe. Vera can’t bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can’t dismiss the possibility.

Then, in the isolated wilds of the Northumbrian countryside, near the Three Dark Wives standing stones which have triggered legends across the centuries, a second body is found. As folklore and fact begin to collide, Vera knows she has to find Chloe to get to the truth.

But it seems that there are dark secrets in their community - ones that may be far more dangerous than she could ever have believed . . .

The Dark Wives is the next thrilling mystery in the Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling series from Ann Cleeves.

Great narrator

Absorbing story, enjoyed hearing more about Vera, Joe, Charlie and the new girl Rosie following the death of Hollie in the last book

Great book giving the ability to visualise Vera on form as ever

Well written story and I didn’t grasp the links until Vera explained all to the team.

Vera back on top form

I enjoyed this story much more than the previous Vera book and found it difficult to stop listening during the first two thirds while Vera and her team were searching for the missing girl. Although Chloe was the focus, she remained a shadowy figure throughout, the other characters took centre stage and were well written. Once the perpetrator had been arrested the rest was an anti-climax, the excitement fizzled out and the last third of the book seemed flat as Vera unravelled the motivation for murder. As usual the male voices were excruciating especially Joe’s but fortunately I found the female voices to be much better on the ear in this reading.

great current story totally credible

as one of the men's voices were a little bit off could have done with a further narrator but didn't take away from the story

I enjoyed the story but the narration irked me at times.

I really enjoyed the story as I love the Vera character and the descriptions are so good it's like mentally watching an episode.
The narration annoyed me alot to begin with as the accents were awful and at times sounded more Hull than Newcastle! And what the heck was the Grandads accent suppose to be? He sounded French at times! His speech Impediment slipped in and out when she remembered to roll the Rs

Excellent story

The story was interland full of twists, but the narration grated on me at times, particularly when “Joe” was speaking. I possibly just have too many north eastern relatives with the genuine accent!

Very well constructed and relevant

I’m not always a Vera fan but this was definitely a very interesting one. The insight into the care system where the murder takes place seems very well researched and the backdrop of a village traditions made it the murder seem mystical as well as modern. It also followed on very well from the events of the Rising Tide.
