Summary

Unconscious bias affects us all, every day of our lives. But it can be overcome. Here are the stories of how change happens.

For the past 30 years, scientists, psychologists, teachers and entrepreneurs have been coming up with ways to overcome our biases and end unconscious discrimination, whether it be on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, religion age or even body type.

In this landmark book, Nordell sets out to meet the people who are finding solutions - from meditating police chiefs to innovative hiring policies - and explains how their discoveries are set to change the world.

Important and useful though could be better read

Lots of good content here, but I think could have benefitted from a professional reader. I wish I'd bought it on e-book where I could have focused on the key points, and made notes more easily.

Thought provoking, important book.

As a teacher, I was drawn to this text and pleased to find a lot of references I could think on and apply to my practice.

This is an important discussion to be had. It is eye-opening to realize just how much bias works ‘under the hood.’

Listen, think and act.

How to challenge & overcome biases

The End of Bias: How We Change Our Minds is a non-fiction book that delves into the concept of unconscious bias and how it influences our decisions, actions, and behaviours. Drawing on research from psychology, neuroscience, and sociology, the author, Jessica Nordell, explores how biases form and how they can be challenged and changed. Nordell argues that awareness of our biases is only the first step towards combating them, and provides a range of evidence-based strategies that individuals and organisations can use to overcome their biases and promote diversity and inclusion. Through examples of individuals and organisations that have successfully challenged bias in their respective fields, Nordell demonstrates that change is possible and offers a roadmap for creating a more equitable and just society.

The End of Bias: How We Change Our Minds is an impressive and thought-provoking book that offers a fresh and innovative perspective on the issue of unconscious bias. Nordell's writing style is clear, engaging, and informative, making it accessible to a wide range of readers. She artfully uses real-life stories and examples to illustrate her points, providing a relatable and memorable reading experience.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is Nordell's emphasis on the importance of action, not just awareness, in combating bias. Her evidence-based strategies provide practical tools that readers can use to challenge and overcome their biases, both individually and collectively. Her solutions are grounded in research and are tailored to different contexts, making them relevant and applicable to various sectors, including education, healthcare, and criminal justice.

Overall, The End of Bias: How We Change Our Minds is an important and timely book that offers a fresh and innovative approach to addressing unconscious bias. Nordell's writing style is engaging, and her practical strategies make the book a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in promoting diversity and inclusion in their personal and professional lives. This book is essential reading for educators, policymakers, business leaders, and anyone else who wants to create a more equitable and just society.

Great polemic

Offered great views of non-bias, and ideas to address our ignorance. Inherent in the material seemed to be the extinction of dominance, which I think is less about being human and more about artificial intelligence, or Disney.
There is difference, there is inequality, there is dominance, superiority and inferiority - I believe accepting and rolling with these realities is better than attempting to eradicate them - viva le difference!!!
Narration was emotionally dramatic at times which I considered at times as irritating (look at me!), and thought it would be interesting with a different narrator. As a suggestion to Audible: You could mix genders and cultures to be different from the writers.
