Your mother is not who you think she is…

When the phone rings in Judy McVee’s Languedoc farmhouse, she knows her past has finally caught up with her. It’s her daughter, frantically asking why there are journalists on her London doorstep making terrible accusations.

Decades earlier, Judy was a girl with big plans – to ensnare a rich husband, to make something of herself, to rise above her upbringing and leave behind past tragedies. Wealthy young widower Rory Harrington seemed the perfect target – but Judy hadn’t reckoned on actually falling in love with him.

Now her daughter Francesca, who has secrets of her own, must come to terms with the realisation that the mother she thought she knew wasn’t real. Where has Judy gone – and was anything she told her family true?

Moving from Cape Cod to London, New York to the South of France, THE END OF SUMMER is a gripping, nuanced literary thriller from a writer at the top of her game.

I loved this book! It was gripping all the way through. Couldn’t stop listening. Well written and very clever story line.

The story telling and the suspense until almost the end of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions of France and London were very realistic and I could picture myself in these places. Fictionally, the characters were very realistic and it kept my suspense until almost the end of the book. It’s one of those that you want to keep reading to find out the outcome. Thoroughly enjoyed.

OK

Not the audiobook for listening to while you out&about or doing something else. I found I had to concentrate as the story is set over 3 timelines 1985, 2000, 2014 (therefore probably better as a book). Felt like a bit of a ‘saga’ and goes at a fairly slow pace.

This is THE BEST BOOK I’ve listened to / read in years.

What a joy to read. I read it, and listened to it simultaneously on holiday, in one day. It explores the relationship between a mother and daughter, eras apart, but their personalities complex, deep and loving. There were joyous moments, laugh out loud moments and of course, the thread of the twisty plot that everyone enjoys. I loved it, I loved the narrative (even if people don’t love the voice of the dad, it doesn’t matter) they were both brilliant. I felt this from the first page and Charlotte is very special writer. Totally recommend and I can’t wait to talk about it with my own mum.

Wasn’t sure about this but had been recommended, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but far better.

Good plot, easy listen

Loved Francesca’s voice, found Judy’s annoying. The plot was good - ideal for a holiday ‘read’

Good book, really bad narration

The book and story are quite good but the narrator for Judy is terrible. Her rendition of Rory is simply awful.
